PIGG’S PEAK- Sifiso Matfunjwa was born and raised in Piggs Peak, Malandalahle, a small town known for its quiet hills and tight-knit community, this young footballer’s journey is one defined by courage, resilience and unwavering belief. From dusty grounds to competitive leagues, his story reflects the determination of a player who refused to let circumstances define his destiny.
His love for football began at under-13 level when he played for Piggs Peak Black Swallows FC juniors. It was during these early years that his talent started to shine. More importantly, it was his junior coach, Linda Chisano, who saw potential in him and encouraged him to take the sport seriously. That encouragement planted a seed of ambition that would grow stronger with time.
At just 16 years old, he took a major step in his career when he signed for Marikana FC, a senior team competing in the promotion league. That moment marked the realisation that football was not just a hobby, but a calling. Soon after, another breakthrough followed he was signed by Piggs Peak Rangers, a bigger club competing in the Super League. In his first season with the team, they won the league and play-offs, earning promotion to the National First Division. It was a defining moment that proved his hard work was paying off.
However, the journey has not been without challenges. Balancing school and football was one of his biggest struggles, as both demanded equal attention. The 2024/25 season also tested him deeply. After moving to Mbabane, limited training time affected his performance, making it his toughest season yet.Despite this, he remains mentally strong. He prepares by training twice a day during the week, resting well and staying hydrated. More importantly, he constantly reminds himself: “I can and I will, no matter what.”
Without strong parental support, he learned to rely on himself. While his parents feared injury and financial instability, he carried a personal conviction that one day, it would all make sense. On difficult days, he remembers those who believe in him and the promises he made to himself.
Football, he says, is his peace, his joy, his everything 90 minutes where problems disappear. Guided by discipline, respect, hard work, perseverance and teamwork, his short-term goal is simple: continuous improvement.
In five years, he envisions himself playing for big teams outside Eswatini, earning well and living his dream. Above all, he hopes to represent the national team and compete in the Africa Cup the ultimate stage where his journey from Piggs Peak could inspire a nation.
