LOMAHASHA – Umbutfo Eswatini Defence Force has dismantled a suspected cross-border criminal network involving illegal gold mining and dagga trafficking following a major intelligence-led operation in the northern Hhohho region, with goods valued at over E584,000 recovered.
The operation was carried out late on Friday, 26 June 2026 at Mbongose Hills, where army personnel acted on intelligence information pointing to organised illegal activities involving both local and foreign nationals operating in a coordinated supply chain.
During the raid, soldiers uncovered a large consignment of gold-bearing sand weighing approximately 7.82 tons. Preliminary estimates suggest the material could yield about 53.8 grams of refined gold, with a street value of around E172 000. Authorities believe the operation is linked to a broader cross-border network involving facilitators and buyers based outside the country, with investigations still ongoing.
In a separate but related discovery at the same location, officers also intercepted a major dagga consignment with an estimated street value of E412 000. The seized material included processed dagga, seeds, and waste products packaged in different forms, indicating large-scale production and distribution activity.
Authorities also recovered a Taurus 92 pistol loaded with 11 rounds of live ammunition. The firearm is currently undergoing verification to establish its licensing status and possible connection to the criminal activities under investigation.
A total of 11 suspects were arrested during the operation, including both Eswatini and South African nationals believed to be involved in illegal mining, coordination, and cross-border trafficking activities. Among those detained are individuals alleged to be part of a structured network linking extraction sites to external buyers.
Army Commander Lieutenant General Moses Mashikilisane Fakudze commended the Umbutfo Eswatini Defence Force success of the operation, describing it as a major breakthrough in disrupting organised criminal syndicates operating within and across national borders.
The army further praised intelligence gathering efforts and cooperation from members of the public, which contributed to the success of the mission.
Authorities have warned that intensified operations will continue targeting illegal mining and drug trafficking networks, particularly those suspected of operating across borders and exploiting natural resources for criminal gain.
All suspects, along with the recovered materials and equipment, have been handed over to relevant law enforcement authorities for further investigation and possible prosecution. Officials say investigations into the wider network are ongoing and may lead to further arrests.
