MATSAPHA – Yesterday night municipal council staff from across the region found a different way to mark heritage day as they traded their usual boardroom roles for traditional attire, music and dance during a cultural night at Esibayeni Lodge in Matsapha.
Heritage Day is being celebrated not only through the traditions people inherit, but through the cultures they share with one another. Gathered under the Southern Africa Inter-Municipal Sports Association (SAIMSA), the officials used the evening to step away from their professional routines and celebrate the different cultures represented within the group.
Traditional clothing added colour to the gathering, while music and dance gave the officials an opportunity to express their heritage in a setting where colleagues became more than just people they work alongside.
The celebration also highlighted how cultural exchange can create connections between people from different municipalities. Instead of focusing on their usual responsibilities, the officials had an opportunity to experience and appreciate traditions beyond their own.
For some, the evening offered a chance to proudly showcase familiar cultural expressions, while for others, it provided an opportunity to learn about the traditions of colleagues from different backgrounds.
The gathering came as Eswatini marked Heritage Day, a day that provides an opportunity to reflect on the traditions, values and cultural practices that form part of the country’s identity.
At Esibayeni Lodge, however, heritage was not confined to speeches or formal observances. It was seen in the clothing people wore, heard in the music they shared and felt through the dancing that brought the gathering together.
The cultural night served as a reminder that while municipal officials may spend much of their time working within offices and council structures, their shared experiences and diverse cultural backgrounds can also bring them together outside the boardroom.
