MANZINI – Balancing lectures, assignments and exams is already a challenge for many university students.
However, for Nicco Phakathy, being a student has not stopped him from building a growing business while pursuing his dreams.
Phakathy, a young entrepreneur originally from Eswatini, is currently studying for a Primary Teacher’s Diploma at Southern Africa Nazarene University. While working toward becoming a teacher, he has also created a small but steadily expanding business that sells perfume oils, clothing and other everyday items to fellow students and the wider community.
His entrepreneurial journey began long before university. While still in high school, Phakathy took his first step into business by selling perfume oils. Though the idea started small, the profits encouraged him to continue.
“I started by selling perfume oils in high school, and the small profit I made showed me that business was possible,” he explained.
Over time, he expanded his products to include fashion items such as tops, sneakers and trousers. In addition to these items, Phakathy also sells airtime and provides MTN Mobile Money services, making it convenient for customers who need quick financial transactions and mobile services.
Most of his customers discover his products through social media platforms, recommendations and word of mouth from satisfied buyers. Phakathy believes that good service and fair pricing have helped him build trust with customers.
A typical day for the student entrepreneur begins with attending lectures and focusing on his academic work. After classes, he dedicates time to communicating with customers, promoting products online and arranging deliveries.
Like many entrepreneurs, Phakathy has faced challenges along the way, including balancing schoolwork with business responsibilities, limited capital and market competition. However, he says these challenges have helped him grow stronger and more creative in finding solutions.
Running the business has also helped him become financially independent and develop valuable life skills such as discipline, patience and resilience.
Looking ahead, Phakathy hopes to grow his small venture into a recognized brand that reaches more customers and offers a wider range of products.
“Do not wait for the perfect moment. Start with what you have,” he advised other students who wish to start their own businesses.
His journey stands as proof that determination, courage and hard work can turn even the smallest idea into a promising future.
