MALKERNS– What was expected to be an intimate performance on one of the Standard Bank Luju Food & Lifestyle Festival’s smallest stages turned into one of the weekend’s biggest surprises as DJ Obsession drew an energetic crowd that exceeded his expectations.
The celebrated Eswatini DJ, who performed at the Buzz Stage during the festival, said he was left amazed by the overwhelming support from festivalgoers, describing the atmosphere as one of the best experiences of his career.
“The energy at the Buzz Stage was at the top level. I had a very good experience playing there,” he said.
“What took me by surprise is that this is one of the smallest stages at the festival, but the energy was just unmatched. So many people came for my set. I wasn’t expecting that many people.”
With this year’s Luju theme, ‘Kwesukasukela – A Return to the African Future,’ celebrating African heritage, DJ Obsession carefully crafted a set that blended tradition with modern sounds.
“To incorporate this year’s theme, I had to play songs with drums and percussion because those were the musical instruments that were used back then,” he explained.
Understanding the youthful audience gathered at the Buzz Stage, the DJ said preparation was key. He selected music that resonated with Generation Z, including crowd favourites such as ‘Laho Remix’ by Ndloh Jnr and ‘Everybody Wanna Be in Love’ by Calvin Fallo, both of which had festivalgoers singing and dancing throughout his performance.
The performance also marked another milestone in his journey, as it was his third consecutive appearance at the prestigious festival.
“Being part of Luju Festival for three consecutive years means a lot to me. It is one of the biggest festivals in the country and across the SADC region. It shows how much my brand is recognised locally and beyond our borders,” he said.
Looking ahead, DJ Obsession said fans should expect to see him taking his music to even bigger platforms.
“People should expect to see me at more festivals locally and internationally,” he said, signalling that his journey is only just beginning.
