MANKAYANE – The Asibambisane Sibe Ngumndeni Programme, a community-based initiative focused on strengthening family systems and protecting vulnerable children, conducted a follow-up visit in Mankayane on Wednesday, May 6, 2026, assessing a sensitive case involving a 96-year-old caregiver and a young child as part of preparations for Season 2.
The purpose of the visit was to assess the situation in detail and identify the challenges affecting both the child and the elderly caregiver. The team noted concerns relating to the wellbeing of the child in an informal care setting, as well as the physical and emotional strain placed on the elderly caregiver. These findings will inform appropriate social welfare interventions aimed at improving care conditions and support within the household.
During the engagement, the programme team interacted with family members in order to obtain a clearer understanding of how the caregiving arrangement developed. The discussions provided valuable context on the household structure and helped clarify the circumstances under which the elderly woman assumed responsibility for the child. This allowed the team to build a more comprehensive picture of the family dynamics and the pressures affecting daily care.
The programme continues to operate through direct community engagement, using field visits, interviews and case assessments to better understand family challenges. It prioritises child protection, family unity, and support for vulnerable caregivers, particularly the elderly who may be taking on responsibilities beyond their capacity.
By examining real-life cases, the initiative seeks to identify gaps in the social support system and promote safer, more stable caregiving environments. It also ensures that interventions are informed by the lived experiences of families, allowing for more effective and targeted responses.
The case shows the complex realities some households face and reinforces the importance of continuous follow-ups to safeguard vulnerable children while ensuring caregivers receive adequate support.
The engagement also provided an opportunity for the team to strengthen coordination with relevant social support structures, ensuring that the family can be linked to appropriate services where necessary. This collaborative approach is aimed at reinforcing long-term solutions that not only address immediate concerns but also promote sustained wellbeing and stability within the household.
As Season 2 approaches, the programme continues to document and engage with similar cases, highlighting ongoing efforts to strengthen child protection systems and family welfare support across communities.
