MBABANE – His Majesty’s Correctional Services (HMCS) is rolling out its annual Easter programme across correctional centres in Eswatini during the Easter holidays , bringing religious services and counselling to inmates as part of efforts to support rehabilitation and personal transformation . The programme will see different church denominations visiting facilities to conduct sermons, prayers and counselling sessions .
For many inmates, Easter inside prison carries a different weight, marked by reflection and quiet moments away from the routines of daily incarceration. The absence of family gatherings and community celebrations often associated with the holiday makes the season more introspective within correctional facilities.
Through this initiative, HMCS is opening its facilities to faith based groups that engage inmates in spiritual reflection during one of the most significant periods on the Christian calendar. Officials say the programme is intended to offer emotional and spiritual support to inmates, many of whom spend the holiday period separated from their families and communities.
Correctional officers note that participation in Easter services is often high, with inmates filling available spaces to listen and pray. The gatherings provide a break from routine and create space for personal reflection, highlighting the emotional impact such programmes can have within correctional environments.
This year’s theme, drawn from Isaiah 53:3–5, focuses on suffering, forgiveness and healing messages that HMCS says are meant to resonate within the correctional environment.
However, independent verification of the programme’s impact was not immediately available. Attempts to obtain comment from civil society organisations and prison reform advocates were ongoing at the time of publication. Experts have previously noted that while spiritual initiatives can play a meaningful role, their effectiveness is often strengthened when combined with education, skills training and reintegration support.
Even so, for many inmates, Easter is more than a date on the calendar it is a moment to pause, reflect and consider the possibility of change.
