MBABANE- Eswatini is ushering in a new era of digital healthcare, directly impacting its rural communities. The celebratory launch at Happy Valley centres on the digitalisation and sustainability of the nation’s community health services, marking a significant strategic move by the Ministry of Health.
The Community Based Health Information System (CBHIS) now closes the data management loop. Zanela from Health Information Management Systems (HIMS) stated, “We are closing the loop investment has been made in health facility data systems, now it’s time to digitalize community health services.” This new system promises to streamline data collection, improving the efficiency and effectiveness of community interventions.
Furthermore, the launch of the Community Health Strategy accompanies the rebranding of the beloved Rural Health Motivators into the Community Based Health Programme. Deputy Director Rejoice Nkambule highlighted the sustainability of the model, noting that the programme “shows how a programme rooted in chiefdom is sustainable.” This focus on local leadership and ownership is key to long term success.
The event acknowledged nearly 50 years of community health excellence, with the Minister of Housing & Urban Development underscoring the vital role of prevention. The Minister stressed, “Prevention is equally important as care. Our community volunteers are our soldiers!” This statement honors the hundreds of community health volunteers who form the backbone of the system.
International partners affirm their commitment to this transformation. Chiara Pierotti of UNICEF expressed pride, stating, “UNICEF is proud to support this transformation of the community health programme. We commit to continue this partnership.” This external validation, alongside support from the World Bank and The Global Fund, guarantees the Ministry of Health’s commitment to continued investment in these essential programmes.
The collective efforts of dedicated Ministry of Health staff, community health volunteers, and rural community leaders make this vision a reality, uniting to build healthier communities across Eswatini.
