MBABANE– Eswatini Medical Christian University (EMCU) has welcomed its new students for the 2026/27 First-Year Orientation, marking the beginning of their journey into university life.
The orientation brought together first-year students from the Faculty of Applied Social Sciences and the Faculty of Health Sciences & ICT, who gathered for a day of welcome, motivation and guidance as they begin their studies at EMCU.
The programme brought together university leadership, academic and administrative staff, government officials and other distinguished guests who were invited to welcome and motivate the new students as they embark on their academic journey.
Among the distinguished guests was Senator Sphelele Mkhonta, who encouraged the students to approach university with determination and a positive attitude. Addressing the new students, Mkhonta told them that he saw “great minds” before him and reminded them that the journey they were beginning was achievable. “I’ve walked the same journey you’re embarking on today. It is possible, it is doable and it is achievable with a positive attitude,” he said.
Also present was the Ministry of Education and Training Principal Secretary, Ms Naniki Mnisi, alongside other senior government officials who joined the university in welcoming the new intake and sharing messages of encouragement.
The university’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Paul Yang, also delivered the welcoming address, challenging the new students to view their education as more than a pathway to personal success.
Professor Yang encouraged the students to embrace the motto, “Let’s study to help others,” emphasising the importance of using knowledge and professional skills to serve society.
He reminded the students that EMCU brings together different disciplines, but that they share a common purpose, serving people. He urged them to approach their studies with gratitude, responsibility and a spirit of service.
The orientation also provided an opportunity for the new students to familiarise themselves with the university community and gain insight into the expectations and opportunities that come with being an EMCU student.
Beyond the formal addresses, the programme featured student entertainment, including a soothing musical performance by fourth-year student Dalingcebo Tsabedze, adding a vibrant and welcoming atmosphere to the proceedings.
The First-Year Orientation serves as an important introduction to university life, giving the new students an opportunity to connect with their peers, meet members of the university community and receive guidance as they transition into higher education.
For the Class of 2026/27, the message from the orientation was clear: dream big, embrace the journey, and use the knowledge gained to make a difference in the lives of others.
