MBABANE– The Kingdom of Eswatini and the European Union have reaffirmed their longstanding partnership, with fresh discussions focusing on expanding trade opportunities, accelerating digital transformation and unlocking new investment prospects that could boost economic growth and create jobs for emaSwati.
This emerged during high-level engagements between the Right Honourable Prime Minister Russell Mmiso Dlamini, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Senator Pholile Shakantu and Ms. Patricia Llombart Cussac, the Managing Director for Africa at the European External Action Service (EEAS), who is on an official visit to the kingdom.
Ms. Llombart Cussac was accompanied by the European Union Ambassador to Eswatini, Karsten Mecklenburg.
The meetings highlighted the strong diplomatic and development ties that have existed between Eswatini and the European Union for decades, with both parties exploring practical ways to deepen cooperation in line with the country’s development aspirations.
Government officials said the discussions focused on strengthening collaboration in areas that have the potential to significantly improve livelihoods, stimulate economic activity and position Eswatini as a competitive player in regional and international markets.
A major focus of the discussions was trade and investment.
During separate engagements with Minister of Commerce, Industry and Trade Manqoba Khumalo, the parties explored strategies to expand Eswatini’s access to lucrative European markets under existing trade arrangements.
The discussions also centred on attracting more European investment into priority sectors of the economy, supporting local industries and empowering Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) to become more competitive.
Officials further examined ways to strengthen standards, improve quality infrastructure and enhance export competitiveness to enable more local products to access international markets.
For Eswatini, increased exports to Europe could translate into greater foreign exchange earnings, industrial growth and the creation of sustainable employment opportunities.
The European Union also highlighted a number of development initiatives it continues to support in the kingdom, reflecting its commitment to Eswatini’s long-term economic and social development.
Digital transformation was another key pillar of the discussions.
In a separate engagement with Minister of Information, Communications and Technology Savannah Maziya, talks focused on strengthening digital infrastructure and expanding connectivity across the country.
The discussions explored opportunities to advance e-governance systems, improve digital public services and enhance cybersecurity capabilities.
These areas have become increasingly important as Eswatini pursues its vision of building a modern digital economy capable of attracting investment, improving service delivery and creating opportunities for innovation and entrepreneurship.
Government officials noted that the European Union’s Global Gateway initiative presents significant opportunities for cooperation in digital infrastructure development and technology-driven growth.
The initiative seeks to support sustainable and high-quality investments in strategic sectors around the world, including digital transformation, transport, energy and education.
Analysts say stronger cooperation in ICT could help bridge the digital divide, improve access to online services and equip young people with skills needed in an increasingly technology-driven global economy.
The engagements also reinforced the importance of diplomacy in advancing economic development.
By strengthening relations with one of the world’s largest economic blocs, Eswatini stands to benefit from increased trade, investment, skills transfer and development support.
The Government of Eswatini reiterated that the European Union remains one of the kingdom’s key development partners and a valuable ally in advancing sustainable development and shared prosperity.
The meetings concluded with both sides expressing optimism about the future of the partnership and a shared commitment to translating discussions into practical initiatives that deliver tangible benefits for businesses, communities and citizens across the country.
As Eswatini continues its drive towards economic diversification and digital transformation, the strengthened partnership with the European Union is expected to play an important role in supporting the kingdom’s development agenda and expanding opportunities for future generations.
