NEW YORK – Eswatini has positioned itself as a champion of Africa’s economic transformation, with His Majesty King Mswati III announcing catalytic funding of USD 5 million (E86 555 400) towards the Africa Strategic Investment Alliance (ASIA).
Delivering the remarks on behalf of His Majesty at the Global Partners Platform launch in New York, Minister of Finance Neal Rijkenberg described the initiative as a “milestone moment” in Africa’s journey towards prosperity. The launch was attended by African leaders, global investors, UN representatives, and private sector giants, with Mastercard and other partners applauded for their support.
A Bold Vision for Africa’s Future
His Majesty’s message carried a clear and urgent call: Africa must close the gap between its aspirations and realities. With the continent’s youth population expected to reach 375 million in the labour force by 2030, and over 20 million young Africans entering the workforce each year by 2035, the King stressed the need for bold partnerships to create between 80 to 125 million jobs in the next 15 years.
“Let us leapfrog in the coming decade by harnessing digital technologies, finance, and innovation,” the speech urged. “We must unite people, capital, and prosperity to ensure no African is left behind.”
Harnessing Digital Transformation
Highlighting Africa’s digital divide, the King underscored the urgent need to expand connectivity, boost digital literacy, and unlock access to affordable financing. The ASIA platform, he said, will pool resources through innovative mechanisms such as So-ko-kuu.Africa, with the goal of bridging the continent’s USD 330 billion SME financing gap.
By aligning with the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and leveraging partnerships with global technology leaders such as Microsoft and Mastercard, ASIA aims to empower micro, small, and medium enterprises to drive Africa’s growth.
Eswatini Leading by Example
The USD 5 million (E86 555 400) commitment from Eswatini will serve as catalytic funding to support small businesses, women, and youth in the Kingdom. His Majesty urged African leaders, traditional authorities, and development partners to follow suit, emphasizing that domestic resources must lay the foundation before the rest of the world joins in.
“May the seed that partners sow grow into a baobab tree, under whose shade African families will find shelter from life’s challenges,” the King’s remarks concluded, reaffirming Africa’s shared vision under Agenda 2063 and Agenda 2030.
A United Call
The launch of ASIA marks the beginning of a new era of collaboration between governments, the private sector, and philanthropic organizations. Leaders pledged to share expertise, provide technical support, and mobilize financial resources to ensure that Africa achieves inclusive and sustainable growth.
Eswatini’s leadership role in this global platform underscores its commitment to not only shaping Africa’s future but also inspiring the continent to harness its vast potential for generations to come.
