MBABANE- The Eswatini Olympic and Commonwealth Games Association (EOCGA) is set to host its upcoming Athletes Commission elections, anticipation is building among the nation’s sporting community. The elections, which aim to strengthen the voice of athletes within the country’s sports governance, are open to all athletes-though the EOCGA is particularly encouraging those with international experience to step forward.
Mkhulisi Dlamini, EOCGA’s Communication Manager, emphasized the importance of attracting elite athletes who have represented Eswatini on the global stage. “We are looking for elite athletes who have mostly international experience, but all athletes are welcome to apply for the Athletes Commission elections,” Dlamini stated. He highlighted that the Commission’s purpose is to ensure that the concerns and aspirations of athletes are heard at the highest levels of sports administration.
Dlamini further stressed the need for incoming commission members to understand the responsibilities that come with their roles. “We wish for the upcoming members who will be selected to be part of the board to know their role-that one has been selected to do,” he said. This, he explained, is crucial for effective representation and advocacy within the EOCGA and beyond.
To ensure new members are well-prepared, Dlamini confirmed that an induction process will follow the elections. “Once those members have been selected, they will go through induction and be taught on what they should be aware of,” he said. He added that the EOCGA office is eager to foster a collaborative relationship with the new commission, aiming to build a strong partnership for the benefit of all athletes.
The Athletes Commission plays a vital role in lobbying for athlete development, acting as a mouthpiece for competitors across all sporting codes in Eswatini. As the elections approach, the EOCGA’s inclusive approach signals a commitment to broad representation and professional growth for the nation’s athletes.
