MBABANE – Eswatini Railways has reaffirmed its commitment to transparency, accountability and the protection of public assets by taking decisive action against fuel theft cases that have affected the organisation in recent years.

The national rail operator revealed that it has worked closely with law enforcement agencies, specialists and other authorities to investigate incidents of fuel theft, while simultaneously implementing robust internal control measures to prevent future occurrences.

According to a statement issued on June 15, 2026 by the  organisation, the crackdown has already yielded results, with some cases concluded through both internal disciplinary processes and the courts, while several others remain under active investigation.

Matters involving suspected criminal conduct have been referred to law enforcement agencies, leading to ongoing court proceedings.

Eswatini Railways said the action forms part of a broader strategy aimed at strengthening governance, safeguarding resources and reinforcing public confidence in the organisation.

The company has introduced enhanced monitoring systems, tighter compliance measures and stronger risk management practices designed to detect irregularities and close operational gaps that may be exploited for unlawful activities. In addition, employees are undergoing continuous awareness programmes aimed at promoting ethical conduct and accountability at all levels of the organisation.

Despite the incidents, Eswatini Railways emphasised that the actions of a few individuals do not reflect the values of the organisation or the commitment demonstrated daily by the overwhelming majority of its workforce.

The organisation noted that its employees continue to serve the nation with professionalism and integrity, ensuring the delivery of safe, efficient and reliable rail transport and logistics services that support economic growth and regional trade.

Eswatini Railways further assured stakeholders, customers and the public that it remains fully committed to cooperating with law enforcement authorities and the judiciary to ensure that all individuals implicated in unlawful activities are held accountable.

As it celebrates six decades of service, the organisation says it remains focused on building a stronger, more resilient institution anchored on good corporate governance, operational excellence and responsible stewardship of public resources.

The rail operator has also appealed to members of the public to report any suspicious activities involving its operations, stressing that protecting national assets requires collective vigilance and partnership between the organisation and the communities it serves.
