MBABANE- Bringing history to life through motion graphics, Nelsiwe Simelane, 29, transformed the official logo celebrating King Mswati III’s 40 years on the throne into a regal, timeless animation embraced nationwide.
The talented multimedia creative at Eswatini TV combined modern techniques with traditional symbolism to craft a visual story of strength, continuity, and national pride.
For Simelane, the project was more than design it was storytelling in motion. Each frame was carefully crafted to honour four decades of leadership, blending creativity with dignity, resulting in a piece that represents the nation, by one of its own.
Simelane credits her five-year journey at Eswatini TV for shaping her approach to such a historic project. “Working in a national broadcasting environment taught me to approach every project with intention, cultural sensitivity, and technical excellence,” she said. “For the King’s 40-year anniversary, I was entrusted with animating the logo. My focus was on motion, timing, and visual rhythm to elevate and honour the original design.”
The creative vision behind the animation was guided by both tradition and modernity. Simelane used elegant transitions, cinematic lighting, and refined motion pacing to maintain a regal tone while applying contemporary motion graphics techniques to make the animation visually compelling. “Animation can amplify the story already embedded in the design,” she noted, “and it was important to interpret it respectfully.”
Challenges came in balancing creative expression with national responsibility. “The logo is an established national symbol, so every animation choice had to support its dignity,” she explained. Her experience allowed her to approach the task with precision and subtlety, ensuring the animation complemented the grandeur of the occasion.
Seeing her work celebrated nationwide is deeply fulfilling. “Much of our work happens behind screens, so witnessing it become part of a historic national milestone is incredibly meaningful,” Simelane said. “It shows that animation can serve culture, heritage, and national identity.”
She encourages young Eswatini creatives to master their craft, collaborate with others, and refine their technical skills. “You don’t always have to design everything from scratch. Sometimes your strength lies in elevating and enhancing existing work,” she said.
For Simelane, the project is a personal source of pride. “As a liSwati, contributing my skills to celebrate 40 years on the Throne is a historic and proud moment,” she said, “and knowing my animation amplifies this national milestone is incredibly rewarding.”
