MBABANE – Eswatini joined the global community in commemorating International Autism Day under the inspiring theme “Celebrating Differences”, with a strong call for an inclusive society where every individual is accepted, valued, and empowered.

Speaking during the commemoration held at the Deputy Prime Minister’s Office, Deputy Prime Minister Senator Thulisile Dladla emphasized that it is the responsibility of every Liswati to ensure that no one feels left behind.

“To truly celebrate differences, we must move beyond awareness to acceptance and action. We must listen to the voices of individuals with autism, their families, and advocates,” said the DPM.

She commended all stakeholders for their strides in raising awareness and promoting inclusive practices, particularly Autism Eswatini. She further encouraged the media to continue raising awareness on autism and other disabilities throughout the year.

“From community outreach programs to inclusive education initiatives, these efforts are laying the foundation of a more understanding society. But we must be vigilant in ensuring that no child, no adult, and no family is left behind,” she added.

The DPM also called for an intensive national study to understand the prevalence of autism in Eswatini. She noted that findings from such research should be accessible in national libraries and community centers to help eliminate stigma and discrimination.

Disability Manager Fikile Shongwe explained that Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurological condition that affects communication, social interaction, and behavior. She highlighted the importance of early detection and intervention.

Autism Eswatini Chairperson, Rev. Senzo Hlatshwayo, expressed gratitude to the DPM’s Office for its unwavering support. He announced that April has been officially declared Autism Month by the organization and shared findings from a study in the Lubombo Region, which revealed that 1 in 6 people may be affected.

Rev. Hlatshwayo also invited the public to the Autism Challenge 4km Hike at Tfutjana Mount Resort, KaKholwane, on Saturday, April 5, 2025, as part of the awareness efforts.

Other key speakers included Epilepsy Eswatini Director Abraham Ntjalintjali, Disability Advisory Council representative Dr. Ngcebo Mbuli, and FODSWA President Bongani Makama, all echoing the need for continued collaboration in supporting individuals with autism.

The event underscored Eswatini’s growing commitment to building a compassionate and inclusive society where every citizen, regardless of ability, thrives.
