SIKHUPHE– As Eswatini continues to position itself as a preferred destination for international conferences, diplomacy and investment, government has accelerated the upgrading of diplomatic arrivals and departures lounges at King Mswati III International Airport to ensure visiting Heads of State, diplomats and other distinguished guests receive a world-class welcome.
The latest milestone was showcased when Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Senator Pholile Shakantu, hosted Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation for a guided tour of the ongoing construction works at the airport.
The visit demonstrated government’s commitment to modernising the country’s diplomatic infrastructure and ensuring that international visitors experience the Kingdom’s renowned hospitality from the moment they arrive.
The upgraded facilities come at a strategic time, following the official opening of the state-of-the-art International Convention Centre (ICC) by His Majesty King Mswati III in April 2026. The ICC has significantly strengthened Eswatini’s capacity to host regional and global conferences, diplomatic summits and high-level meetings.
At the same time, the introduction of additional regional flights by RENAC has increased passenger traffic, particularly among government delegations, investors, development partners and international organisations visiting the Kingdom.
These developments have placed greater demand on the airport’s diplomatic facilities, making the expansion and modernisation of the lounges both necessary and urgent.
Speaking during the tour, Senator Shakantu said the project reflects government’s determination to ensure that every distinguished guest arriving in Eswatini receives services that match the country’s growing international stature.
She noted that first impressions matter in diplomacy, adding that the upgraded lounges will improve efficiency, enhance security and provide a comfortable, professional environment for visiting dignitaries.
The minister said the investment was about more than infrastructure, describing it as part of Eswatini’s broader vision of strengthening international relations, promoting investment and projecting the Kingdom as a capable host of major international events.
Shakantu also expressed appreciation to Minister of Public Works and Transport, Chief Ndlaluhlaza, together with the management of King Mswati III International Airport, for their leadership and collaboration in ensuring the successful implementation of the project.
She commended the strong partnership between ministries and institutions, saying such cooperation continues to deliver infrastructure that supports national development priorities.
Members of Parliament serving on the Portfolio Committee welcomed the progress made on the project after witnessing the construction work firsthand.
Committee Chairperson Hon. Alec Lushaba thanked the Minister and airport management for facilitating the visit and providing a detailed briefing on the development.
He said the committee viewed the upgraded lounges as an important national investment that would strengthen Eswatini’s diplomatic capabilities while enhancing the country’s image before the international community.
Lushaba said modern diplomatic facilities send a strong message that Eswatini is prepared to host international dialogue, investment forums and high-level engagements in an environment that reflects professionalism, efficiency and excellence.
The committee further noted that as the Kingdom continues expanding its international partnerships, infrastructure supporting diplomacy must evolve alongside the country’s ambitions.
The upgraded lounges are expected to improve the movement and reception of visiting Heads of State, ministers, ambassadors, development partners, investors and other VIP guests, ensuring seamless arrivals and departures while maintaining high standards of privacy, comfort and security.
The parliamentary oversight visit also reaffirmed the importance of continued investment in strategic national infrastructure that supports economic growth, tourism, international cooperation and the country’s long-term development agenda.

With the ICC already attracting major international gatherings and improved regional air connectivity bringing more visitors into the country, the upgraded diplomatic lounges are expected to play an increasingly important role in strengthening Eswatini’s position as an emerging regional hub for diplomacy, business and international cooperation.
