MANZINI – The Eswatini Water Services Corporation (EWSC) is promoting prepaid water services as a way of helping households take greater control of their water consumption and spending.
EWSC Managing Director Jabulile Mashwama said the prepaid system allows customers to determine how much they want to spend on water and manage their consumption according to their available household budget.
“We want to say consume what you’ve already quantified through the prepaid method and manage your consumption that way,” Mashwama said. She explained that prepaid water gives customers an opportunity to monitor their consumption and make decisions based on the amount they can afford to spend.
Mashwama said understanding water consumption was important because households could underestimate how much they spend when they do not have reliable access to water services. Reflecting on a recent visit to the Shiselweni Region, she recalled engagements with customers who had recently been connected to the EWSC network.
She said some customers explained that before receiving household connections, they had spent significant amounts of money and time trying to secure water. These experiences highlighted the need for households and the country to recognise the economic cost associated with limited access to reliable water.
“Until you actually realise and quantify the cost of not having water, you don’t realise how much you’re spending on water,” she said. Prepaid services could help customers better understand their water needs while encouraging them to use the resource responsibly.
The corporation is also using its ‘Konkhe ngaWater’ campaign to promote smart water usage and responsible living. The campaign brings together EWSC initiatives under one message focused on encouraging customers to make informed choices about water.
Mashwama stressed that managing household water consumption should not only be viewed as a financial issue but also as part of protecting the country’s limited water resources. She also called for collective responsibility among households, businesses and communities to conserve water and protect the resource for future generations.
The prepaid approach forms part of EWSC’s broader efforts to become a modern and customer-centred utility that responds to the needs of its customers.By giving customers greater control over how much water they purchase and consume, EWSC believes prepaid services can contribute to smarter household budgeting while encouraging responsible water use.
