EZULWINI – The opening of the Ezulwini Palazzo International Convention Centre (ICC) has placed Ezulwini firmly in the national spotlight, with growing anticipation about the economic opportunities the facility is expected to bring.

With the ICC now operational, attention from across Eswatini has shifted to the town, widely regarded as the country’s tourism hub. The state-of-the-art facility is expected to attract conferences, business meetings and international events, significantly boosting activity in the area.

Employment hopes rise among residents

Members of the public have expressed high expectations, particularly around employment opportunities linked to the new development. Many are hopeful that the ICC will create jobs directly, while also stimulating further business growth in surrounding areas.

Expectations are even higher given that a hotel within the ICC complex is still under construction and is anticipated to employ additional emaSwati once completed. There is also optimism that new businesses and supporting establishments will emerge as demand for services increases.

Hospitality sector expected to support demand

Existing hospitality establishments, including Lugogo Sun and Royal Swazi Sun, are expected to play a key role in supporting the ICC’s operations, particularly while the on-site hotel is not yet finished.

The growing demand for accommodation and related services is likely to create a ripple effect across the tourism and hospitality sectors, further strengthening Ezulwini’s position as a premier destination.

Minister of Finance Neal Rijkenberg indicated that the ICC is expected to host between two and three meetings per week, a projection that underscores the facility’s potential to drive consistent economic activity.

Town authorities plan for sustainable growth

Ezulwini Town Council Chief Executive Officer Mathokoza Shongwe acknowledged that the opening of the ICC brings increased attention and responsibility for the town.

Speaking to Eswatini TV, Shongwe said the council intends to engage with the facility’s operators to ensure coordinated and sustainable development. He noted that while Ezulwini remains relatively small in size, it is known for its natural beauty, which must be preserved even as development accelerates.

“We recognise that all eyes are now on Ezulwini. It is important that we work together with all stakeholders to manage growth in a way that protects what makes this town unique,” he said.

Balancing development with environmental preservation

Residents echoed the importance of maintaining the town’s environmental appeal, noting that its well-kept surroundings contribute significantly to its reputation as a tourism destination.

Shongwe emphasised that future development must strike a balance between urban expansion and environmental conservation, ensuring that natural features are not compromised.

Residents compare ICC to global destinations

Local residents have welcomed the opening of the ICC with enthusiasm, describing it as a transformative development for the town. Some even compared the facility to those found in global cities such as New York City and Las Vegas.

They also referenced remarks by King Mswati III, who likened the development to Eswatini’s own version of Dubai, suggesting that the project could redefine the country’s economic and tourism landscape.

With expectations running high, the Ezulwini ICC is widely seen as a catalyst for growth, innovation and opportunity, signalling a new chapter for the town and the nation at large.
