MALKERNS – Fashion designers and models brought colour, creativity and cultural storytelling to the Luju Festival through the Fashion Café Pop-Up Runway, where collections inspired by this year’s “Kwasukasukela, A Return To The African Future” theme took centre stage.
The runway showcase brought together designers, models and fashion lovers, creating a platform for creative talent to express African heritage through contemporary fashion. The collections reflected different interpretations of the festival theme while highlighting the role of fashion in preserving culture and telling stories.
Among the designers featured was Philisiwe, the creative behind Philz Designs, whose collection was presented by models on the runway. Zikode Zwane of Flow Wears also showcased designs that added to the variety and creativity displayed during the fashion presentation.
Sinakekelwe Mhlanga, the designer behind Uniquity, presented distinctive pieces that reflected individuality and artistic expression. Meanwhile, Nomfundo Simelane of Karo Textiles shared her experience of working with the “Kwasukasukela” theme, highlighting how it encouraged designers to explore culture and use fashion as a form of storytelling.
The runway also provided models with an opportunity to gain exposure and share their experiences in the fashion industry. Welile Matsebula, who was dressed by Batfobile, described the showcase as her third experience modelling on the runway, reflecting on her continued journey and growth within the industry.
The Fashion Café Pop-Up Runway formed part of Luju Festival’s wider celebration of food, music, fashion and culture. Beyond showcasing clothing, the presentation demonstrated how fashion can connect the past and present while giving local creatives a platform to share their work with a wider audience.
The showcase ended with applause from festivalgoers, who gathered to celebrate the designers’ creativity and the models who brought their collections to life.
