KUKHANYENI – A determined Form 5 learner from Manzini Central High School has claimed victory in the Umbutfo Eswatini Defence Force (UEDF) recruitment race, just hours before sitting for her national exams, opening the door to life-changing opportunities.
The race, held on the morning of Tuesday, 30 September 2025, at Kukhanyeni Inkhundla Centre, drew hundreds of hopefuls vying for coveted spots in the national army. Families and friends turned out in large numbers to provide moral support as competitors were pushed to the limits in a gruelling two-fold 3.2-kilometre sprint, designed to test both speed and endurance.
The Winners
Sanelisiwe Mphaphu (18) powered to the finish line, securing the top female position. She is currently completing Form 5 at Manzini Central High School and plans to join the military immediately after finishing school.
Among the male participants, Sipho Mamba (32) claimed first place, looking forward to the stability of permanent employment, while Ndumiso Sibandze (28) secured second place.
Mphaphu is not the first Form 5 pupil to achieve such a feat. Earlier in the month, Zodwa Mkhatshwa (19) won the race at Mtfongwaneni Inkhundla on 23 September, while Thembinkosi Mavimbela (20) triumphed under Ngwemphisi Inkhundla on 27 September. Both are completing Form 5 at their respective schools.
The Rules of Selection
Under UEDF recruitment guidelines, only the top two male finishers and the leading female qualify for the next phase, which includes vetting, medical examinations, and further assessments to ensure that only the most resilient candidates advance to enlistment.
This year’s Kukhanyeni recruitment differed from previous years, as the race alone determined the outcome. In case of a tie for first or second place, candidates would compete in press-ups, with the first to give up considered to have failed.
A Race of Hope
For many participants, the Kukhanyeni race represented more than competition. It was a test of resilience in the face of unemployment and uncertainty. The stories of Mphaphu, Mamba, and Sibandze reflect the struggles and aspirations of Eswatini’s youth.
As the UEDF continues its nationwide recruitment drive, Kukhanyeni stands as a shining example of determination and endurance. The three winners now carry the hopes of their families and communities as they prepare for the next stage in their journey to serve the nation.
