MBABANE – History was etched into the books of Eswatini Medical Christian University (EMCU) on Friday night, as the institution hosted its first-ever Fresher’s Ball.

The University Auditorium was transformed into a beacon of elegance and jubilation, marking a significant milestone in the university’s social calendar.

Held on November 22, 2025, the event defied the typical university party stereotype. Billed as a night of “clean fun,” the ball strictly prohibited alcohol, but had potent mix of high fashion, spiritual fervour, and youthful energy. The result was an atmosphere that was at once glamorous and deeply grounded in the university’s Christian ethos.

The historic occasion was graced by the university’s top brass, including Vice Chancellor Professor Paul Yang, Registrar Sebenta Menon, and Board Member Sandile Zwane. Their presence underscored the administration’s commitment to fostering a holistic student environment that balances academic rigour with social cohesion.

The evening commenced with a splendid session of praise and worship led by the institution’s own team. The atmosphere in the auditorium shifted tangibly as they performed a rendition of ‘Someday’, a song that seemed to resonate deeply with the students, many of whom are embarking on long and demanding medical careers. The performance kept the event alive from the very first note, setting a tone of hope and reverence.

Taking to the podium, Vice Chancellor Professor Paul Yang delivered a moving address that served as the moral compass for the night. In a fatherly and impassioned speech, he offered life lessons on morality, urging the future healthcare professionals to walk in faith. “Your profession is a calling, not just a career,” he reminded the hushed room. “Let your character be as polished as your appearance tonight.”

The entertainment lineup reached its zenith with a headline performance by the gospel sensation and award-winning artist, Nothando Hlophe. Her set was described by many as the turning point of the night, elevating the event from a formal gathering to a full-blown celebration.

Guiding the audience through this rollercoaster of excitement were the Masters of Ceremonies, Lerato and Poet Christian Maz. The duo was electric, their chemistry and wit keeping the joyful students on their feet and ensuring the energy never dipped.

As midnight approached, the focus shifted to the highly anticipated Mr and Miss Fresher 2025/2026 pageant. The runway show was nothing short of top-tier, featuring professional-grade choreography that allowed the contestants to showcase their confidence and style.

The fashion on display was described as historic. Students donned the most stylish and fashion-forward gowns, dresses, and suits seen in the institution’s history, turning the academic venue into a Milanese catwalk. Registrar Sebenta Menon noted that it was impressive to see the students showing their appreciation for the event through such coordinated outfits and boundless energy.

Tasked with the difficult job of selecting the winners were two of Eswatini’s pageant royalty: the outgoing Miss Teen Eswatini, Mikaela Rudd, and former Miss Cultural Heritage, Gcinizwi Sukati.

The highlight of the night came just after midnight during the crowning ceremony, presided over by Board Member Sandile Zwane and Registrar Sebenta Menon.

Sisekelo Dlamini, a Bachelor of Nursing student, was sashed as Mr Fresher 2025/2026. He was joined by the radiant Cebisa Mazibuko, a Psychology student, who was crowned Miss Fresher 2025/2026.

The runners-up were equally celebrated. Wakhile Mbabaso, also a Nursing student, took the title of First Prince, while Sabelo Mahlambi was named Second Prince. In the ladies’ category, the First Princess title went to Nokulunga Simelane, with Asanda Dlamini taking Second Princess, both hailing from the Psychology department.

As the lights dimmed, the sentiment among the students was unanimous: this must be the beginning, not the end. “We thank the institution for this incredible night,” said one first-year student. “We request that this does not stop here. This should be the beginning of many Fresher’s Balls to come.”

The inaugural EMCU Fresher’s Ball proved that faith and fun are not mutually exclusive, setting a high standard for all future university events.

Outgoing SRC President Andile Lawson and the institution’s Sports Minister Samkelo Sacolo lauded the institution for the ball and requesting that it becomes an annual event.
