MBABANE – Team Eswatini made an impressive start at the XXI Africa Aquatics Zone IV Championships, leaving the nation with much to celebrate after Day 1 of the competition currently underway at Enjabulweni School in Manzini.

The standout moment came when young star Josea Potgieter shattered an 11-year record in the 100M Backstroke, a feat that last saw a mark set in 2014. The achievement has not only written his name into the history books but also lifted the spirits of the entire team.

Team Manager Illana George praised the performance, saying: “I feel they did fairly well, our athlete Josea Potgieter broke an 11-year record in the 100M Backstroke. It was an exciting result as it was last broken in 2014, which is great for Eswatini.”

Eswatini also celebrated a gold medal victory, further fueling the team’s momentum. Assistant Coach Baphelele Masilela, experiencing his first championships, expressed pride and optimism: “Since it is my first time at such Championships, it has been a beautiful experience so far. After Day 1 results, Team Eswatini is looking very good. I am happy with the PBs and I have so much faith in the athletes for the remaining races. Considering that we got a Gold Medal, it is great motivation for the rest of the team.”

With a record-breaking start, a gold medal in the bag, and the majority of athletes achieving personal bests, Team Eswatini has set the tone for what promises to be a thrilling campaign. As the championships continue, hopes are high for even more medals and historic moments in the pool.
