MACETJENI – Eswatini’s digital transformation journey has reached another significant milestone following the official launch of the Macetjeni Innovation Hub (iHub), a facility set to empower rural communities through technology, innovation, entrepreneurship and digital skills development.
The state-of-the-art facility was officially launched August 6, 2026, by the Minister of Commerce, Industry and Trade, Honourable Manqoba Khumalo, who described the initiative as a demonstration of Government’s commitment to creating an enabling environment for entrepreneurship, innovation and inclusive economic growth.
Established by the Small Enterprises Development Company (SEDCO) in partnership with the Eswatini Communications Commission (ESCCOM) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the Macetjeni iHub becomes the second innovation hub of its kind in the country, following the establishment of the Pigg’s Peak iHub.
The facility is designed to support Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), youth, women and persons with disabilities by providing access to digital technologies, business support services and skills development opportunities.
Speaking during the launch, Khumalo said the Macetjeni iHub reflects Government’s determination to ensure that emaSwati, regardless of location, have access to opportunities presented by technology and innovation.
“The launch of the Macetjeni iHub demonstrates Government’s commitment to creating an enabling environment for entrepreneurship and inclusive economic growth,” said Khumalo.
He commended SEDCO, ESCCOM, UNDP and all project partners for their contribution towards making the initiative a reality, reaffirming Government’s commitment to strengthening MSMEs through business development services and digital innovation.
“We appreciate the efforts of SEDCO, ESCCOM, UNDP and all project partners for bringing this initiative to fruition. As Government, we remain committed to supporting MSMEs through business development services and digital innovation,” he said.
The Macetjeni iHub is equipped with a computer laboratory, high-speed internet connectivity and co-working facilities that provide entrepreneurs and innovators with a modern space to develop ideas, access information and grow businesses.
Through the facility, beneficiaries will receive training in computer literacy, Microsoft Office applications, Artificial Intelligence (AI), entrepreneurship, digital marketing, business management and career development.
The centre will also offer business incubation support, mentorship and networking opportunities aimed at helping MSMEs improve productivity, embrace technology and compete effectively in the market.
The establishment of the innovation hub is expected to play a crucial role in bridging the digital divide by bringing modern technology and skills closer to communities in the Lubombo Region.
It will provide young people and entrepreneurs with tools to develop innovative solutions, create employment opportunities and contribute towards sustainable economic development.
A key feature of the Macetjeni iHub is its youth-led approach, with the facility operated by young entrepreneur Siphiwo Lushaba, founder of Togo Digital, who was selected through a competitive process.
His appointment highlights the important role of young innovators in driving Eswatini’s digital future and demonstrates confidence in youth leadership within the technology sector.
“By placing young innovators at the centre of this initiative, we are creating opportunities for youth to use their creativity and skills to develop solutions that can contribute to Eswatini’s economic growth,” said Khumalo.
Although officially launched on August 6, 2026, the Macetjeni iHub had already begun making an impact during its pilot phase, where more than 100 participants successfully completed training programmes in computer literacy, Microsoft Office applications, Artificial Intelligence, CV writing and professional application preparation.
The positive response from the community has highlighted the growing demand for digital skills and confirmed the importance of expanding innovation hubs to more communities across the country.
Beyond digital training, the facility is expected to strengthen the entrepreneurial ecosystem by supporting start-ups and MSMEs with access to technology, mentorship and business development opportunities.
The partnership between Government, SEDCO, ESCCOM and UNDP demonstrates the power of collaboration in delivering initiatives that improve livelihoods and create lasting opportunities for communities.
As Eswatini continues embracing the Fourth Industrial Revolution, the Macetjeni iHub stands as a symbol of progress, innovation and opportunity — a place where technology will empower communities, businesses will grow and a new generation of digital entrepreneurs will emerge.
