MBABANE- Eswatini is strengthening its position in international meat markets through a structured, science-based quality assurance system designed to meet strict global food safety standards.
The approach ensures safety, consistency, and nutritional value from farm to consumer, while enhancing the country’s reputation as a reliable and competitive exporter.
This continued progress reflects Eswatini’s commitment to aligning its meat production systems with internationally recognised certification frameworks. It has enabled the country to maintain and expand access to high-value export markets including Norway, the Netherlands, Taiwan, and the United Kingdom, contributing to national economic growth and strengthening confidence in locally produced meat.
Speaking on the Kusile Breakfast Show on Eswatini TV on April 21, 2026, Nomalungelo Mthombo, Senior Quality Supervisor at Eswatini Meat Industries (EMI), outlined the strict systems that guide meat safety and quality assurance across the production chain.
“When we talk about quality, we are describing a promise of safety, freshness, and nutritional value that meets global standards,” she said.
Mthombo explained that EMI’s quality system follows a clear and controlled step-by-step process designed to eliminate risks and ensure consistency at every stage.
“Step one is farm inspection, where Veterinary Assistants assess animal health before approval. Step two is controlled entry and processing under strict supervision. Step three is post-mortem inspection to detect any disease. Step four is laboratory confirmation of suspected cases. Step five is condemnation and destruction of unsafe meat. Step six is cold chain storage and refrigerated transport. Step seven is retail handling to ensure final quality is maintained,” she said.
She emphasised that each stage is non-negotiable in protecting public health and maintaining export standards. “We do not compromise on safety. Any suspected case is immediately isolated and only released after full laboratory confirmation,” she added.
After processing, approved meat is stored under strict cold chain conditions using specialised chillers and transported in refrigerated trucks to preserve freshness and prevent contamination. At retail level, trained personnel ensure proper handling and storage so that Grade A quality is maintained until the product reaches consumers.
Mthombo further highlighted that animal welfare plays a critical role in final meat quality. Stress during transportation reduces glycogen levels in animals, resulting in higher pH levels that negatively affect tenderness, colour, and overall product quality. Proper handling and humane treatment, she said, remain essential throughout the entire system.
She concluded by reaffirming EMI’s commitment to global food safety excellence, noting that the system not only supports export competitiveness but also strengthens consumer confidence and national food safety standards.
Eswatini’s continued investment in world-class meat quality systems positions the country as a trusted and emerging leader in premium meat production, supporting economic growth while upholding the highest standards of safety and excellence.
