MBABANE – The Government of Eswatini, in partnership with World Vision Eswatini and the Eswatini Water Services Corporation, signed a Service Coverage Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) today at the World Vision National Office in Mbabane.

This is a  joint effort between Government  and NGOS to achieve universal access to clean water and sanitation by 2030 under Sustainable Development Goal 6.

The agreement, signed on June 6, 2025, paves the way for a five-year project valued at $13 million. Funding will be equally split between World Vision Eswatini and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Energy, with each committing $6.5 million. The Eswatini Water Services Corporation will contribute technical support, oversee implementation, and ensure sustainability throughout the project’s life benefit

The project is set to benefit over 300 000 people during its initial phase, it  targets some of the most water-stressed communities across the country.

Speaking at the ceremony, World Vision Eswatini National Director Tinah Mukunda described the initiative as transformational. “Year-round access to clean water will not only reduce cases of waterborne diseases but will also keep children in school and safeguard them from the risks of traveling long distances in search of water,” she said.

Meanwhile, Ministry representative Lindiwe Mbingo emphasized the government’s strong commitment to the partnership. She explained that the Ministry’s contribution will be managed through its Department of Water Affairs in close collaboration with the Eswatini Water Services Corporation. A special project unit within World Vision Eswatini will handle the day-to-day implementation, with funds channelled to a designated account.

She revealed that a comprehensive National WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) Master Plan is in the pipeline. Developed in collaboration with various stakeholders and the World Bank, the plan will help track national progress and shape future interventions. It is expected to be finalized by October 2025.

A Board member of World Vision Eswatini, Sharon Maziya, praised the unity shown by all partners. “This collaboration is proof that meaningful impact is possible when we work together,” she said.

She concluded her remarks by sharing inspirational quotes from former U.S. President Harry S. Truman  “It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit”  and from leadership author Dr. Myles Munroe “The wealthiest place in the world is the graveyard  we must die empty, having used every gift inside us.”

The project will be officially launched in a selected community, which is expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
