MANZINI– As the 127 graduates of William Pitcher Teachers College celebrated their achievements, the focus shifted toward the critical themes of sustainability and digital citizenship that are essential for navigating today’s world.

The importance of these concepts was emphasised by speakers during the graduation ceremony, highlighting the responsibility educators have in fostering a future that prioritises continuity, inclusivity, and ethical engagement with technology.

Minister of Education and Training Owen Nxumalo called upon the graduates to commit themselves to continuous growth and improvement, particularly in areas such as digital citizenship and sustainability. “In today’s world, you must change your sustainability practices,” he stated, underscoring the need for educators to adapt to new realities that impact both education and society.

Nxumalo urged graduates to engage in research and innovative practices that enhance their teaching while fostering a culture of inquiry among their students. He stressed, “You must organise, manage, and protect your trust groups and collaborations.” This call to action emphasised the necessity for educators to work collectively, advocating for inclusion and sustainability within the educational framework.

Notable figures from various institutions in Eswatini attended the ceremony, further reinforcing the message of adaptation and collaboration. They highlighted the importance of engaging all stakeholders—students, parents, and the community—in creating an inclusive environment that supports both educational excellence and sustainable practices.

The speakers also emphasised the necessity of nurturing responsible digital citizenship among students. Graduates were encouraged to prepare their learners for the complexities of the digital age while promoting ethical behavior. This focus is crucial, as the digital landscape increasingly shapes how future generations learn, interact, and contribute to society.

As the ceremony concluded, the atmosphere was filled with optimism and determination. The graduates left with a clear mandate: to lead with purpose and prioritise sustainability and digital citizenship as they embark on their teaching careers.

This graduation marks not just a personal achievement for the 127 graduates but a collective pledge to contribute meaningfully to a future characterised by inclusion, innovation, and sustainability in education.
