PIGG’S PEAK – Residents of Pigg’s Peak have been forced to adjust to unusually harsh weather conditions after a spell of cold temperatures, overcast skies and persistent rain swept across the town, leaving streets waterlogged and daily activities disrupted.
The chilly weather, accompanied by strong cloud cover and intermittent showers, has brought a noticeable drop in temperatures in the Hhohho town, with commuters, vendors and public transport operators seen braving the cold under umbrellas and heavy clothing.
The wet conditions have also created puddles in parking areas and along roads, slowing movement for motorists and pedestrians alike. Public transport vehicles were seen lined up at the town’s transport hub as passengers waited for shelter from the rain.
Pigg’s Peak is generally among the cooler parts of Eswatini during winter because of its higher elevation. Climate records show that July and early August are typically the coldest period of the year, with daytime temperatures often remaining below 20 degrees Celsius and overnight temperatures dropping close to single digits.
The current weather has therefore intensified the winter chill, with the added rainfall making conditions feel even colder than the actual temperature.
Residents have expressed concern over the impact of the weather on schoolchildren, elderly people and those who work outdoors, saying prolonged exposure to the cold and rain can make everyday tasks difficult.
Small-scale traders and informal vendors have also had to protect their goods from the rain, while some outdoor activities have either been postponed or scaled down because of the unfavourable conditions.
The Eswatini Meteorological Service has previously noted that winter weather in the Highveld, which includes the Hhohho region, is characterised by cold mornings and evenings, with changing cloud conditions and occasional weather systems bringing rain to the area.
As the cold spell continues, residents are encouraged to dress warmly, keep children and elderly family members protected from the elements and exercise caution when travelling on wet roads.
