MBABANE- The Ministry of Health has taken a significant step towards strengthening Eswatini’s health system following the appointment of a 13-member Health Advisory Standing Committee by Minister for Health Mduduzi Matsebula on Wednesday January 7,2026.
The committee, appointed in terms of the Health Act of 2023, brings together experienced health professionals, senior officials and representatives from key sectors to advise the Minister and the Ministry of Health on policies and strategies aimed at improving and sustaining the health of the population.
Announcing the appointment, Minister Mduduzi Matsebula urged committee members to provide honest, ground-level reflections of the country’s health system, emphasising that their role was not to impress leadership but to help identify real challenges and practical solutions.
“This committee must speak the truth about what is happening in our health facilities and communities. We need advice that leads to real change and better services for the people,” the Minister said.
The Health Advisory Standing Committee will support the implementation of the National Health Policy and the National Health Strategic Plan, advise on emerging health issues, advocate for adequate resources, and promote accountability and improved performance within the Ministry of Health.
Chairperson of the committee and Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Health, Khanyakwezwe Mabuza, said the committee was ready to begin its work, starting with an induction programme scheduled for January 21 to 23.
“The induction will prepare members to jointly assess the state of health in the country and to clearly understand the challenges facing the health system, so that we respond in a coordinated and informed manner,” Mabuza said.
The committee comprises Khanyakwezwe Mabuza, Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Health who serves as chairperson; Mthunzi Shabangu, Principal Secretary for Public Service; Dr. Velephi Okello, Director of Health Services; Princess Tsandzile Dlamini, Regional Administrator; Dr. Phetsile Dlamini, representing the private health sector as a medical specialist.
Dr. Samkeliso Shabangu, representing the public health sector as a general practitioner; Thembinkosi Dlamini from civil society organisations; Muzi Dlamini, representing faith-based health organisations; Lungile Dlamini from urban development; Simphiwe Kunene, representing logistics; Dr. Jabulile Malaza, representing Parliament; Bongani Chauke, responsible for procurement and finance; and Kwanele Magagula, providing legal representation.
Members will serve for a term not exceeding three years. The committee will meet every three months and submit quarterly reports to the Minister for Health. An annual report outlining achievements, challenges and recommendations will also be presented.
The appointment of the Health Advisory Standing Committee underscores the Ministry of Health’s commitment to inclusive decision-making, expert guidance and practical solutions aimed at improving healthcare delivery and outcomes for all Emaswati.
