MANKAYANE– For months, patients and staff at Mankayane Government Hospital endured cold water and difficult conditions after a fire damaged part of the hospital earlier this year. Now, a donation from the Mankayane Town Board is expected to bring comfort and relief as winter temperatures continue to drop.
The Board recently handed over a 250-litre geyser to the hospital administration following the fire incident that caused significant damage to infrastructure and equipment within one of the wards.
According to information shared on the Mankayane Town Board Facebook page, the handover was led by Board Chairperson Councillor Bongani Dlamini, accompanied by Finance Committee Member Councillor Thembie Mabeleza and Chief Executive Officer David Madlopha.
Hospital officials revealed that nearly 80 percent of the facility had been operating without access to hot water since the fire, creating daily challenges for both patients and healthcare workers.
For sick patients, especially during the cold season, hot water is more than convenience, it provides comfort, dignity and support during recovery. Nurses and caregivers have also had to adapt to difficult working conditions while continuing to provide essential healthcare services.
Speaking during the handover, Councillor Bongani Dlamini said the Board responded after receiving a request for assistance from the hospital administration.
He said councillors unanimously agreed to support the institution because of its importance to the town and surrounding communities.
“The hospital remains one of the prides of the town,” he said.
The hospital administration expressed gratitude for the donation, describing it as timely as winter approaches and temperatures continue to decline.
Beyond restoring access to hot water, the gesture also reflected the growing importance of community support and cooperation in helping public institutions recover from unexpected challenges.
Mankayane Government Hospital remains one of the main healthcare facilities serving residents from across the area and nearby communities.
