EZULWINI – The newly opened Khanyisile Hee Yeon Memorial (HYM) Clinic has treated more than 4 000 patients in its first seven months of operation, with patients coming from across Eswatini as well as neighbouring Mozambique and South Africa.
This was revealed by Daniel Kim, representative of HYM Clinic and son of the facility’s founder, during the official opening of the clinic by His Majesty King Mswati III at Nyonyane, Ezulwini, on Thursday.
Kim said the number of patients served demonstrated the demand for quality healthcare and the potential for the facility to serve communities beyond Ezulwini.
“Though we have been open for only seven months, we have already cared for more than 4 000 patients. They have come from every region of Eswatini, and even from neighbouring Mozambique and South Africa,” he said.
Kim said the movement of patients across borders showed that quality healthcare could provide hope beyond national boundaries.
He also expressed appreciation to volunteer doctors, nurses and medical specialists from South Korea and the United States who had travelled to Eswatini to support the clinic.
According to Kim, the specialists had not only assisted patients at HYM Clinic but had also contributed to strengthening the country’s national hospitals through knowledge sharing and collaborative care.
He said the vision behind HYM Clinic extended beyond operating a single healthcare facility, with the organisation aspiring to see Eswatini develop into a medical hub for Southern Africa.
“We see Eswatini becoming a medical hub for Southern Africa, an example of excellent healthcare, advanced technology, and professional education that is accessible to all,” Kim said.
As part of that vision, Kim announced plans for further investment in diagnostic services at the clinic.
He said Dr Lee of Manna Mission USA had pledged approximately E30 million next year towards the establishment of a CT Scan Centre at the facility.
Kim said the proposed centre would expand diagnostic services while creating training opportunities for local doctors, nurses, radiographers and other healthcare professionals.
He, however, stressed that achieving the broader healthcare vision would require continued collaboration between charitable organisations and Government.
“We sincerely believe that the future of healthcare in Eswatini will be built through a strong partnership between charitable institutions and the Government of the Kingdom,” he said.
Kim called for continued support in areas including infrastructure development, training of local healthcare professionals and the provision of quality healthcare services across the country.
He said HYM Clinic remained committed to working alongside the Ministry of Health as a partner in serving the people of Eswatini.
The clinic was established through a partnership involving South Korean and international partners and the Ministry of Health.
Kim said the facility was built on the legacy of his late sister, Seong Yeon, with support from donors and partners from Eswatini, South Korea and the United States.
He thanked the King for attending the official opening, saying His Majesty’s presence had brought hope to patients, encouragement to staff and inspiration to those involved in the project.
