MBABANE – A wave of hope and renewal is set to sweep across Eswatini as His Majesty King Mswati III, through the Prerogative of Mercy, has granted freedom and sentence reductions to thousands of inmates in an extraordinary act of compassion.
Effective September 23, 2025, 464 inmates from various correctional facilities who have six months or less remaining on their sentences will walk free. In addition, a further 2,346 inmates with longer terms will benefit from sentence reductions under Directive No.2 of 2025.
This magnanimous gesture by His Majesty embodies forgiveness and second chances, underscoring his vision for a society that values rehabilitation over condemnation.
Restoring Hope and Unity
The directive is more than an act of leniency, it is a national call to rebuild lives. Communities are encouraged to welcome these individuals back with open hearts, supporting their reintegration into society.
Baphelele Kunene, HMCS PRO, has pleaded Emaswati to accept the released inmates as they have undergone through proper rehabilitation and further gained skills that would help them survive.
“… all those to be released have rehabilitated and have learnt their lessons,” he said.
