EZULWINI – His Majesty King Mswati III envisioned the Ezulwini Palazzo and International Convention Centre (ICC) as a platform to position Eswatini on the global stage, with the facility expected to strengthen the country’s ability to host international gatherings and attract the world’s attention.

Minister of Tourism and Environmental Affairs Jane Mkhonta-Simelane said the development reflected the King’s foresight that Eswatini, despite its modest size, possessed the potential to become a major meeting place for nations and international organisations.

She was speaking during the signing of the Hotel Management Agreement between the Government of the Kingdom of Eswatini and Palazzo Hospitality Services on Friday.

The agreement marks a significant step in the Government’s efforts to ensure that the national facility is managed and sustained in line with international standards.

Mkhonta-Simelane said the project was the result of the King’s vision of a centre whose stature would announce Eswatini’s presence on the international stage.

“It was His Majesty who perceived, long before others could, that the Kingdom of Eswatini, though modest in size, is immeasurable in its potential to convene the nations of the world,” she said.

She added that the King had personally championed the undertaking from its inception to its completion.

The Minister described the facility as more than a physical structure, saying it represented a broader aspiration for a prosperous, outward-looking and First World Eswatini.

The Government, she said, had a responsibility to translate the royal vision into a functioning national asset through the mobilisation of resources, policy direction and the establishment of an institutional framework for its governance and management.

According to Mkhonta-Simelane, the management agreement was the culmination of these efforts and was intended to ensure that the facility would be operated by a capable partner for the benefit of the nation.

She said the appointment of Palazzo Hospitality Services followed a selection process involving a Cabinet Select Committee comprising the Ministers of Economic Planning and Development, Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Finance, and Commerce, Industry and Trade.

The Minister commended the committee for its role in identifying the preferred operator, while also recognising the Technical Working Team for its involvement in negotiations and the process leading to the appointment of the Board of Directors.

She further praised the board for its commitment to concluding the agreement.

Mkhonta-Simelane said the Government’s expectations extended beyond the successful operation of the facility, with the broader objective being to establish Eswatini as an attractive location for international conferences and high-level deliberations.

“With the signing of this agreement, the Ezulwini International Convention Centre is poised to place the Kingdom of Eswatini firmly upon the map of the world,” she said.

She said the country intended to present the venue as a destination where heads of state and governments could meet, international institutions could convene and exhibitions could be hosted.

“To the international community, our message is explicit: Eswatini is open, Eswatini is ready, and Eswatini awaits you,” the Minister said.

The development is expected to create opportunities across tourism, small and medium enterprises, agriculture and the creative sector, while opening avenues for employment and enterprise for young emaSwati.

In his remarks, Board Chairman Mbuso Simelane also acknowledged the King’s vision, saying the facility represented a national legacy that those entrusted with its operation had a responsibility to protect.

He said the partnership with Palazzo Hospitality Services was expected to help realise the ambition of establishing a leading luxury destination in the sub-region and beyond.
