MBABANE– “Beauty is confidence and a confident woman is unstoppable.”

Maureen Massingue is the owner and founder of Kotini Kouture, a high-end fashion brand dedicated to young women of all body types. A self-taught designer with four years in the industry, Maureen is determined to transform how beauty is defined in fashion.

“We design and curate apparel for all body shapes and sizes because we believe beauty cannot be limitedly defined by societal standards,” she explains. “We make clothes that resonate with one’s self-identity.”

Massingue’s passion for fashion began early.

“Since I was a child, I loved everything that had to do with beautiful clothes,” she says. “My mother even stopped buying clothes for me in my absence when I was nine, because I always wanted to pick my own looks.”

But this passion was not just personal. She noticed the industry’s failings:

“It catered to a specific body type, and I wanted to change that. Also, being from a country where fashion isn’t even considered an art, I wanted to break the stereotypes and prove that fashion is a serious career choice.”

Being self-taught has given her resilience, patience, and a deep appreciation for her craft.

Kotini Kouture’s approach is research-driven and highly personal.

“I try to find the common problems each body type has and come up with a design that makes the client comfortable in their own skin,” she says. “I suggest flattering silhouettes and fabrics that enhance their beauty. There’s no greater joy than seeing their eyes glisten and faces beam with confidence when wearing my designs.”

Despite her passion, Massingue admits there are challenges.

“One of the biggest is getting people to understand what service a fashion designer actually provides. Many want me to recreate something they saw online or alter work I didn’t make. Another is explaining slow fashion, why it’s important, why it’s beneficial for society and the environment, and why it costs more than fast fashion.”

Massingue collections are defined by three core concepts.

“Class, elegance, and a touch of drama. My clothes can only shine if the wearer is shining in confidence, and that confidence can’t be taught or dressed, it’s felt from within.”

Massingue has big plans for Kotini Kouture.

“In five years, I want a high-end studio or store with a few employees, where clients get the full Kotini Kouture experience,” she says. “I see the brand as a leading pioneer for growing the fashion industry in the country, through collaborations with fellow creatives to empower our communities. Without community, we are nothing.”
