LAWUBA – The prevailing peace in Eswatini has been attributed, in part, to the work of the late Chief Justice Bheki Maphalala in ensuring that the country’s laws were respected.
Minister for Tinkhundla Administration and Development Sikhumbuzo Dlamini, representing Deputy Prime Minister Thulisile Dladla, made the remarks during Maphalala’s funeral service at Lawuba on Saturday.
Dlamini said the late Chief Justice played an important role in ensuring that the rule of law remained respected in the country.
He said the stability created by respect for the law had contributed to an environment in which people and investors could have confidence in the country.
Dlamini referred to His Majesty King Mswati III’s recent call for investors to come to Eswatini, saying investors had responded to that call.
He said the prevailing peace was among the factors giving investors confidence to come into the country.
According to Dlamini, a country needed strong laws and respect for those laws to maintain stability and create an environment conducive to investment.
He said Maphalala had also made an important contribution by clearly defining the separation of powers among the three arms of government — the Judiciary, Legislature and Executive.
Dlamini said the late Chief Justice made it clear that each arm of government had its own responsibilities and functions.
He described the work of judges as difficult, saying Maphalala nevertheless carried out his responsibilities diligently alongside other members of the Judiciary.
The minister said the country appreciated the work performed by Maphalala during his time as Chief Justice.
The funeral brought together government representatives, members of the Judiciary, the legal fraternity, traditional leaders, family members and mourners to honour Maphalala’s contribution to the country.
