MAHLANYA – The Institute of Research Management and Development (IRDM) inaugurated the “Talents for Start-Up” program, marking a significant milestone in Eswatini’s entrepreneurial landscape. This initiative is designed to empower 30 young entrepreneurs by equipping them with essential tools, mentorship, and resources to cultivate innovative ideas into successful businesses.

During the launch ceremony, IRDM President Dr. Oliver Museka announced a strategic partnership with Tofara Online Trust, wholly funded by Digital Africa. Dr. Museka detailed the rigorous selection process, which identified the 30 beneficiaries from over 400 applications. The selected cohort demonstrates a strong commitment to inclusivity, comprising 20% individuals with disabilities, 15% survivors of gender-based violence, and 65% unemployed youths. Notably, young women and girls constitute 60% of this initial group.

Mandla Methula of the Eswatini Comprehensive Disability Mainstreaming initiative expressed profound appreciation to IRDM for their inclusive approach in the “Talents for Start-Up” program. He specifically commended their efforts in ensuring the inclusion of people with disabilities among the beneficiaries. This aligns with Comfort For Africa’s mission to support the Deaf Community and ensure Deaf people are not left behind, bridging the gap between hearing and Deaf individuals.

Senator Stukie Motsa, in her address, lauded IRDM for its dedication to inclusivity through the Stukie Motsa Foundation. She emphasized that the opportunity provided by the program extends beyond education, serving as a crucial stepping stone to broaden the participants’ reach and potential.

Siphiwe Mkhabela, Director of Finance at SWAGGA, delivered an empowering message, stressing the importance for participants to reclaim their voices and futures through the digital marketing course. She conveyed unwavering belief in their success as they embark on this new journey.

Dr. Monica Nkwanyane of the Eswatini Higher Education Council highlighted the critical alignment of education with the evolving economic demands, noting that digital marketing has transitioned from a niche skill to a core competency. She commended IRDM’s initiative as not only commendable but also strategically positioned to facilitate the youth’s transition from job seekers to job creators.

Ms. Tofara Chokera from Tofara Online Trust underscored the collaborative essence of this initiative, recognizing the 30 beneficiaries’ unique opportunity to partake in this transformative program. The partnership aims to train 160 young individuals across Zimbabwe, Eswatini, and Zambia, furnishing them with in-demand skills relevant to modern professions and fostering career opportunities within Africa’s burgeoning digital economy.

The Mayor of Malkerns Town Council reiterated the robust relationship between the Town Council and IRDM College, emphasizing their joint commitment to enhancing livelihoods through the newly launched program. He highlighted the targeted support for vulnerable populations, including survivors of domestic violence and people with disabilities.

In a significant commitment to supporting the participants, 20 computers were provided for the 30 students enrolled in the “Talents for Start-Up” program. This essential support, courtesy of Digital Africa and Tofara Online Trust, ensures that the young entrepreneurs possess the necessary resources for their training and eventual success.

In closing, Dr. Ashley Museka, a member of the IRDM Board, encouraged the beneficiaries to approach the program with dedication and a mindset geared towards fostering positive change.

The “Talents for Start-Up” program stands as a beacon of hope and opportunity for young entrepreneurs in Eswatini, poised to cultivate innovation, generate employment, and foster an entrepreneurial spirit crucial for driving economic growth.
