MALKERNS — The 5th edition of the Makoti Festival reached new heights on 2 May 2026, transforming Malkerns Country Club into a vibrant celebration of African unity, heritage and sound.
For the first time, the festival introduced a second stage dedicated entirely to DJs — a bold move that doubled the energy and diversity of the experience.
Festival-goers were immersed in a rich cultural atmosphere where traditional attire, languages, dance styles and musical influences blended into one shared space. From colourful fabrics and intricate beadwork to distinctive dance moves, chants and ululations, the grounds became a living showcase of African pride. The atmosphere carried a powerful message — Africa’s cultures are diverse yet deeply connected.
This year’s Makoti Festival was not only a national celebration — it became a regional gathering point, drawing visitors from across Southern Africa, including South Africa, Mozambique, Lesotho and Namibia, among others.
Festival Director Thembinkosi Mthethwa described this year’s edition as a defining milestone. “Each year we grow — not only in size but in impact. This second stage allows us to showcase even more local talent while celebrating the beauty of African culture,” he said.
The timing of the festival carried added national significance as it aligned with celebrations marking King Mswati III’s 40 years on the throne. “We are proud to celebrate alongside the nation. Our mission remains to promote unity among women, celebrate African culture and raise awareness about gender-based violence,” Mthethwa added.
While the main stage delivered powerful live performances filled with gospel, afro-pop, hip-hop and traditional influences, the newly introduced Dance Stage became a magnet for high-energy beats and youthful expression as DJs kept the crowd moving from afternoon into the night.
DJs who lit up the second stage included Thabo “Touch of Soul” Mnisi, AyaCity (Ayanda Motsa) and Bandora (Bandisi Dlamini) — a showcase of Eswatini and the region’s thriving DJ culture.
On the main stage, audiences were treated to electrifying performances from some of Eswatini’s finest musical talents. Nothando Hlophe captivated the crowd with spirit-filled vocals, while Sancheziey performed his beloved hit Siyabonga Gogo alongside traditional dancers. Young Zesh brought crowd-pleasing energy, and As4Jerry P connected powerfully with festival-goers. They were joined by Sarnilo, MCO Jamrock, Lyrical Busts and True Classic, reflecting the depth of local musical excellence.
Beyond the music and dance, Makoti Festival remained rooted in community upliftment. Supported by Orchard Insurance and PDIS, the festival hosted major giveaways valued at E50000 E60000 and E20000 aimed at empowering and rewarding participants. Cheers erupted when Nontokozo Ntshingila was announced as the E50000 grand prize winner — a life-changing moment that highlighted the festival’s commitment to giving back.
As the sun set over Malkerns, the Makoti Festival once again proved that it is more than an entertainment event. It is a living celebration of identity, unity and shared heritage.
“Today is about celebrating who we are — our culture, our unity and our shared future,” Mthethwa said as applause echoed across the grounds.
With two stages, a powerful local lineup, regional participation and meaningful cultural exchange, the Makoti Festival has firmly cemented itself as one of Eswatini’s most important cultural gatherings.
