MBABANE– Motorists and other road users have been urged to exercise extreme caution when travelling along Fonteyn next to Mountain Drive as ongoing bridge construction works coincide with wet weather conditions.
The Municipal Council of Mbabane issued the road safety warning following rainfall currently being experienced, noting that the wet conditions have affected the road surface and could increase the risk of vehicles losing traction.
The Municipal Council of Mbabane warned that the wet and slippery road surface, coupled with ongoing construction activities, requires motorists to exercise extra caution when approaching and passing through the construction area. They warned that reduced tyre-road friction could increase the possibility of vehicles skidding, particularly around the construction site and sections where temporary traffic diversions have been introduced.
Motorists have consequently been advised to reduce their speed and maintain a safe following distance from other vehicles. They have also been urged to follow temporary traffic management measures and obey road signs installed around the construction area. The warning comes as construction continues on the Fonteyn bridge, where road users may encounter changes to normal traffic movement as work progresses.
The council said it is working with the Royal Eswatini Police Service to closely monitor the site and manage the effects of the prevailing weather conditions. The collaboration is also intended to help maintain safe access for motorists and other road users while construction activities continue. They have appealed to residents and motorists to exercise patience, particularly when navigating areas affected by temporary traffic arrangements.
Motorists have been urged to remain vigilant when passing through the affected area, as rainfall and ongoing construction may cause road conditions to change. They are advised to avoid sudden manoeuvres and pay close attention to other vehicles, construction activities, temporary diversions and road signs.
With construction activity continuing at the bridge, motorists are being reminded that conditions at the site can change quickly, particularly during periods of rainfall. The council has urged road users to plan ahead, slow down and allow extra time when travelling through Fonteyn, while cooperating with traffic control measures in place. It also called on motorists to remain attentive throughout the construction zone and take responsibility for their safety by following road signs and driving according to the prevailing conditions.
The Municipal Council of Mbabane said it would continue working to maintain safe access as construction progresses, with the support of the Royal Eswatini Police Service in monitoring the area.
