MBABANE – The 2025 Mbabane Marathon has received a significant financial boost, thanks to a generous sponsorship of E260 000 from MTN Fintech, unveiled during the official launch held at the Hilton Garden Inn.
The announcement was met with excitement and gratitude from event organizers, athletes, and stakeholders, who gathered to witness the formal start of what promises to be one of the biggest community sporting events in the histotory of Mbabane.

Speaking at the event, Sam Shongwe, CEO of MTN Fintech, expressed pride in being part of the marathon’s journey and reiterated the company’s commitment to supporting initiatives that promote health, unity, and economic activity.
“This sponsorship reflects our deep commitment to Emaswati and the values which are innovative, unity and sustainable development growth.” Said Shongwe.
“At MTN fintech we believe in connecting communities through meaningful financial inclusion. I extend my warmest appreciation to the Mbabane Municipality and all partners for allowing us to walk this journey once again. We are incredibly proud to be part of this journey from its humble beginning in 2018 up until now.” Added Shongwe.
Now in its seventh year, the Mbabane Marathon has grown from a small local race into a national spectacle that draws runners from across Eswatini and beyond. It plays a vital role in encouraging healthy lifestyles and stimulating local tourism and business.

Mbabane City Mayor Thulani Mkhonto also delivered remarks at the launch, acknowledging the event’s growth and thanking partners like MTN Fintech for their unwavering support.
“We started in 2018 with 205 athletes who participated and last year we experienced an unmatched growth with athletes reaching 1450. The race will be held at Prince of Wales Stadium on the 22nd of November 2025. Registration are now open starting from the 13th of July to the 31st of September 2025. The event will not any cater for the marathon but there would also be fun race to cater all categories.” Said Mkhonto.
Organizers confirmed that this year’s race will feature multiple categories, including the 42km full marathon, a 21km half-marathon, a 10km fun run, and a corporate relay all aimed at encouraging participation from various segments of society.
As anticipation builds for race day, the spirit of partnership and progress remains the heartbeat of the marathon, with MTN Fintech’s support marking a key milestone in its continued evolution.
