MBABANE— EswatiniMed has announced the retirement of its long serving Principal Officer, Peter ‘Samora’ Simelane, who stepped down on 2 May 2026 after more than three decades at the helm, marking the end of a tenure that helped shape the organisation into a key pillar of the country’s healthcare system.
Simelane, who led the medical aid scheme through years of expansion and reform, is credited with guiding EswatiniMed’s transition into a modern healthcare solutions provider aligned with international standards, while maintaining a focus on service delivery to members across the country.
In a statement, the organisation said his leadership extended beyond systems and structures, pointing to a management style rooted in respect for people, support for teams, and a firm belief that healthcare must be delivered with compassion and dignity.
His departure closes a chapter defined by institutional growth and stability, with EswatiniMed noting that his contribution leaves a lasting imprint on both the organisation and the broader healthcare landscape.
The organisation has since named Sicelo Mkhonta as acting Principal Officer, signalling continuity in leadership at a time when the institution is advancing its service mandate.
Mkhonta brings years of experience within EswatiniMed, backed by expertise in healthcare management, finance, and administration. The organisation said his understanding of internal systems and his steady approach place him in a strong position to carry forward existing programmes while steering the next phase of development.
EswatiniMed said it has full confidence in his leadership as it continues to deliver healthcare services and value to its members.
The transition comes as the organisation builds on its established role in supporting access to healthcare, following decades of growth under Simelane’s leadership.
