MBABANE– The usually fast-paced Mbabane Bus Rank briefly turned into a place of smiles, laughter and cellphone cameras today when Phakelumthakathi made an unexpected visit and freely mingled with vendors, public transport operators and members of the public.
Dressed in traditional regalia and draped in a South African flag, Phakelumthakathi attracted attention almost immediately as people recognised him and gathered around for photographs and conversation.
Instead of keeping his distance, he moved freely through the busy transport hub, greeting people and allowing commuters, kombi operators and members of the public to take turns posing for pictures with him.
One of the warmest moments came when he stopped at a vegetable stall, where he interacted with a female vendor and handled some of the fresh produce on display. The encounter drew smiles from those nearby and reflected the relaxed atmosphere created by his visit.
For traders who spend long hours at the bus rank earning a living, the unexpected interaction offered a refreshing break from the normal routine of selling and serving customers.
Public transport operators also joined in, with several people pulling out their mobile phones to capture photographs and videos. Others simply stood nearby, laughing and enjoying the moment.
Within minutes, Phakelumthakathi had become the centre of attention, yet the interaction remained informal — with handshakes, conversations, selfies and group photographs dominating the visit.
The scenes demonstrated how a simple public appearance can bring people from different walks of life together. Vendors, commuters, drivers and passers-by momentarily forgot the rush of the city and shared in a light-hearted moment at one of Mbabane’s busiest public spaces.
For those who were fortunate enough to meet him, the visit left them with more than photographs — it provided an unexpected and memorable moment in an otherwise ordinary working day.
