PIGG’S PEAK– The Pigg’s Peak Town Council has earned recognition from the Eswatini National Council of Arts and Culture (ENCAC) for using an inter-wards cultural competition at Gobolondlo to bring communities together, celebrate local talent and safeguard the country’s rich cultural heritage.
ENCAC Chief Executive Officer Stanley Dlamini commended the town council for organizing the cultural showcase, which provided a platform for residents from different wards to participate in activities that celebrate Eswatini’s cultural identity and strengthen community bonds.
The competition placed culture at the centre of community development, demonstrating how local authorities can use organised cultural events to encourage participation, nurture talent and keep traditional practices alive.
Dlamini urged other towns across Eswatini to draw inspiration from Pigg’s Peak by introducing similar cultural initiatives that give local artists and performers opportunities to showcase their abilities while promoting unity among residents.
He emphasized that cultural events should not be treated as isolated occasions, but as initiatives that require continued support and commitment to ensure they remain relevant and sustainable.
The ENCAC CEO also appealed to Pigg’s Peak residents to continue supporting the leadership responsible for introducing the initiative, stressing the importance of continuity in ensuring that the competition develops into an enduring feature of the town’s cultural calendar.
PIGG’S PEAK EMERGING AS A CULTURAL DESTINATION
Highlighting the town’s growing reputation for hosting cultural events, Dlamini pointed to its recent hosting of a Zion competition, which he said had captured attention across the country.
The event, together with the inter-wards cultural competition at Gobolondlo, demonstrated Pigg’s Peak’s potential to attract public interest through cultural gatherings and create platforms for artistic and community expression.
Dlamini’s remarks positioned Pigg’s Peak as an example for other local authorities seeking to strengthen cultural participation at grassroots level.
Beyond entertainment, inter-wards competitions can encourage healthy community engagement, create opportunities for emerging talent and strengthen the connection between residents and their cultural heritage.
The challenge now is to sustain the momentum by ensuring that the competition continues in subsequent editions, with consistent support from the town council, residents and other cultural stakeholders.
For Pigg’s Peak, the initiative represents an opportunity to build a stronger cultural identity. For other towns, Dlamini’s message is clear: local leadership and community participation can play a central role in keeping Eswatini’s cultural heritage alive.
