KWALUSENI — By sunrise, the University of Eswatini’s Kwaluseni Campus had already transformed into a lively sea of colour and excitement. Proud families, joyful graduands in flowing gowns, and photographers chasing the perfect shot filled every corner of the grounds, setting the stage for one of the most anticipated days of the academic calendar.

The warm breeze, sitting at 33°C, carried with it the scent of fresh-cut grass and perfume, mingled with ululations, whistles, and the heartfelt laughter of milestones reached. It was a day not only for 1 510 graduands but also for the entire nation to celebrate excellence, resilience, and progress.

Early Joy and Anticipation

Families began arriving from as early as 7:00 a.m., eager to secure the best view of the ceremony. Some brought folding chairs and umbrellas for comfort, but all carried an unmistakable sense of pride. The bleachers and tents filled quickly as graduates adjusted their caps, exchanged final hugs with classmates, and prepared to walk the stage.

Vendors lined the campus roads, selling snacks, flowers, and congratulatory bouquets. For many parents, this was more than a graduation—it was a historic family moment, especially for those witnessing their first university graduate.

Academic Procession and Royal Arrival

As midday approached, a solemn hush swept over the crowd with the arrival of the University Council, Senate, and academic staff. Clad in regal robes of red and black, they processed to the dais to the sounds of the Royal Eswatini Police brass band, signalling the start of the ceremony’s formal proceedings.

At exactly 1:00 p.m., His Majesty King Mswati III, Chancellor of UNESWA, arrived alongside members of the Royal Family, including several Emakhosikati. Unlike previous years, the King and his security detail wore formal suits, adding a fresh elegance to the traditional grandeur of the occasion. Praise singers filled the air, the national anthem was sung, and a wave of reverence swept the campus.

His Majesty confirmed the 43rd cohort of graduands, followed by a scripture reading from Jeremiah 29:11–12 and a prayer. Vice Chancellor Professor Justice Thwala then officially welcomed the King and delivered his keynote address.

Gratitude and Growth

Professor Thwala expressed deep appreciation to His Majesty and the Government of Eswatini for their continued support, highlighting the 1 700 scholarships sustained in 2024. He proudly shared that the university now serves 8 600 students, including 145 international students from across Africa and Asia, underscoring UNESWA’s growing global relevance.

A distinguished guest list—including ministers, MPs, judicial officers, and diplomats—further elevated the ceremony into a national celebration of educational achievement.

Culture Meets Academia

In true Eswatini fashion, vibrant cultural performances complemented the academic traditions. Traditional dancers delivered spirited sibhaca and ingadla routines, earning thunderous applause. Popular artist Sanchiezy captivated the crowd with his performances of “Siyabonga Salukazana” and “Lonyaka Batawuvuma,” while choirs lifted voices in harmonious praise, with the song “Halala” emerging as a crowd favourite.

Honouring Excellence

The highlight of the day came as 1 510 graduands walked across the stage to receive their qualifications:
– 174 Certificates
– 15 Diplomas
– 1 274 Bachelor’s Degrees
– 47 Master’s Degrees

Particularly moving was the moment when police officers, trained in partnership with Matsapha Police Academy, received their diplomas in Police Science to resounding cheers.

Every handshake with His Majesty symbolised years of perseverance, with proud families capturing each smile and bow for posterity.

A Celebration to Remember

As the ceremony drew to a close at sunset, the campus burst into a wave of dancing, laughter, and photographs. The 2025 graduation ceremony was more than an academic milestone—it was a vibrant blend of culture, unity, and achievement, echoing the dreams of a generation ready to shape Eswatini’s future.

And as the celebratory crowds slowly dispersed into the evening, the spirit of pride and accomplishment lingered in the warm air, marking the day as truly unforgettable.
