LUDZIDZINI — Princess Sakhizwe has called on the media to use the coverage of Umhlanga 2026 as a powerful platform to tell the world about the meaning, beauty and cultural significance of Eswatini’s annual Reed Dance.
Speaking during the ongoing Umhlanga festivities, Princess Sakhizwe emphasised that journalists have a responsibility to go beyond capturing pictures and videos by helping international audiences understand the traditions and values behind the celebrated cultural event.
TELL THE WORLD ABOUT UMHLANGA
Princess Sakhizwe said the media plays a crucial role in ensuring that people who have never experienced Umhlanga understand why thousands of maidens gather for the annual ceremony.
“The media has a very important role in telling the world about Umhlanga, what it means, why we celebrate it and the values that it represents,” said Princess Sakhizwe.
She encouraged journalists and content creators to produce informative and engaging stories that showcase the cultural richness of the ceremony, including the traditional songs, dances, attire, discipline, unity and participation of thousands of maidens.
BEYOND THE PICTURES
The Princess stressed that international audiences should not only see the colourful images associated with Umhlanga but should also understand the meaning behind them.
She said media coverage should provide context and educate audiences about the traditions and cultural practices that make Umhlanga an important part of Eswatini’s heritage.
According to Princess Sakhizwe, positive and informative storytelling can help introduce Eswatini’s culture to people across the globe while encouraging greater appreciation of the Kingdom’s traditions.

Princess Sakhizwe further urged the media to exercise responsibility when selecting stories and images for publication, emphasising the importance of highlighting the positive and meaningful aspects of the ceremony.
She cautioned that issues such as littering and other unattractive scenes should not be allowed to overshadow the cultural significance and beauty of Umhlanga.
Her message comes at a time when local and international media houses are intensifying their coverage of Umhlanga 2026, giving journalists an opportunity to showcase Eswatini’s cultural heritage to audiences beyond the Kingdom.
