Landmark water infrastructure project brings clean water to 169 homesteads in Shiselweni Region

QOMINTABA, SHISELWENI REGION, ESWATINI— The Qomintaba Water Supply Scheme was officially handed over to the community on Monday, 25 May 2026, marking the successful completion of a multi-year collaborative infrastructure initiative that will deliver clean, reliable water to 169 homesteads in the Qomintaba area under the Matsanjeni South constituency, Shiselweni Region.
The project, developed under the Kingdom of Eswatini’s Regional Development Fund (RDF) framework and administered through the Ministry of Economic Planning and Development’s Microprojects Programme, represents a total capital investment of approximately E 4 million, with the RDF contributing approximately E 3.7 million of the project cost with EWSC contributed approximately E300 000 worth of material.
A Community-Driven Effort
The Qomintaba Water Association, operating under the Qomintaba Royal Kraal, has been central to driving this project to completion. The community raised 10% in cash and in kind towards the project requirement.
Transforming Lives in Qomintaba
Qomintaba is one of the underdeveloped rural areas under the Matsanjeni constituency, where the majority of community members depend on casual labour and street vending for their livelihoods. The new water scheme addresses a critical need, bringing clean water directly to homesteads and enabling residents to pursue small business opportunities, grow vegetables and fruits, and improve their overall quality of life.
The project will serve both domestic and commercial purposes under the chieftaincy of Chief Gasa WaNgwane. Ongoing operation, management, and maintenance of the scheme will be the responsibility of the community members themselves, ensuring long-term sustainability.
EWSC intends to install prepaid meter’s which will assist manage the water consumption and therefor make it more affordable to the community member’s as opposed to a post paid meter.
Qomintaba is 1 of about 40 projects implemented during the 2024-2025 financial year under Microprojects.
About the Microprojects Programme
The Microprojects Programme, under the Ministry of Economic Planning and Development, empowers grassroots communities to develop themselves through the Regional Development Fund. The programme co-funds community-initiated infrastructure projects in Eswatini, including water schemes, roads, and community halls.
