MBABANE – The Royal Eswatini Police Service (REPS) has dealt a significant blow to the kingdom’s illegal drug trade.
Over a grueling 48-hour operation, law enforcement officers across the country intercepted drug syndicates, resulting in the arrest of nine suspects and the seizure of 405.99 kg of dagga.
The nationwide “clamp down” highlights an unwavering commitment by the police to dismantle the networks fueling the illicit drug market. From the eastern sugar belt of Simunye to the bustling Ngwenya Border Post, the REPS demonstrated that no corner of the country is beyond the reach of the law.
Major Busts Across the Regions
The single largest seizure occurred in Zandondo, where Mliba police apprehended a 30-year-old man. He was found in possession of a staggering 117.45 kg of dagga without a valid permit.
The crackdown continued with high-stakes interceptions in several other key areas:
- Simunye: A 43-year-old man from Siphambanweni was arrested with 60 kg of the illegal herb.
- Dumbe Area: KaPhunga police discovered 53 kg of dagga concealed inside the boot of a Honda Fit. Three suspects, aged 20, 27, and 36, were taken into custody.
- Ngwenya Border Post: Mbabane officers intercepted a Ford Everest during a routine search, uncovering 43 kg and arresting two men.
- Masheleleni: Pigg’s Peak police stopped a black Honda Fit, seizing 47.1 kg. Among the arrested was a 35-year-old man from Botswana, indicating the international reach of these syndicates.
Dismantling the Syndicate
The REPS has signaled that these arrests are part of a broader, more aggressive strategy to protect the nation’s youth and maintain public order. Using the hashtag #Sikhona (meaning “We are here”), the police service continues to reassure the public that they are actively monitoring trafficking routes.
“The relentless efforts of our officers demonstrate that we will not allow Eswatini to be a playground for drug lords,” a spokesperson commented on the recent successes.
As the nine suspects prepare to face the courts, the REPS encourages citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities as they continue their mission of #dismantlingcrime.
