MBABANE– Pupils across Eswatini returned safely to school on the first day of the new term, thanks to the visible presence of the Royal Eswatini Police Service (REPS) Traffic Department.

Officers were stationed along busy roads and near schools, controlling traffic, assisting learners to cross streets safely, and reminding motorists to exercise caution in school zones. The operation, carried out nationwide on 27 January 2026, focused on ensuring children, particularly those new to town, navigated busy streets without incident.

Parents also played a key role, accompanying younger pupils to school to ensure their safety and prevent them from getting lost or exposed to potential danger.Nelisiwe Sibanyoni, a parent of a Grade 1 learner at Hermann Gmeiner Primary School, said, “I can’t risk my kid going alone in these busy streets. I had to make sure she arrives safe at school.”

REPS officers worked closely with the community, urging drivers to observe speed limits, drive responsibly, and remain alert in school zones. Their efforts follow guidance from the Road Safety Council of Eswatini, which reminded all road users to ensure vehicles are roadworthy and to prioritise public safety, especially during the back-to-school period.

The combined efforts of traffic officers and vigilant parents ensured pupils enjoyed a safe and smooth start to the academic year, underscoring the importance of road safety and community cooperation.
