MBABANE– The E300 000 sponsorship of the historic inaugural Mbabane Regional Soccer Knockout Tournament is aimed at fuelling dreams, promoting unity, and empowering the next generation through the power of sport.
This was revealed by Mbabane East Member of Parliament (MP) Welcome Dlamini during the official launch of the tournament and sponsorship at Sigwaca House.
Dlamini extended his gratitude to the sponsor, Basadi Group Chairman and Senator Siphelele Mkhonta, as well as the construction company team.
“On behalf of the people of Mbabane East, and indeed our brothers and sisters in Mbabane West, thank you for investing in what truly matters – our talent and the heartbeat of our city. Phakama Mbabane indeed. Thank you for helping us rise,” said Dlamini.
The legislator said he was delighted to acknowledge the presence of key leaders who contribute to the growth of Mbabane.
“His Worship the Mayor, Councillor Thulani Mkhonto, and the Chief Executive Officer of the Mbabane Municipal Council, Gciniwe Fakudze – your leadership, vision and dedication to the development of our city are invaluable. Thank you for gracing this launch and for your continued support of initiatives that bring joy, health and togetherness to our residents. Mbabane is stronger because of you,” he said.
Dlamini added that the knockout tournament brings together teams from Mbabane East and Mbabane West constituencies under the banner of the Mbabane Football League, an affiliate of the Hhohho Regional Football Association.
He said football at grassroots level was far more than just a game, describing it as a catalyst for positive change.
“It builds discipline, teamwork, resilience and respect. It keeps young people engaged in constructive activities, away from negative influences, while giving them a platform to showcase their God-given talent,” he said.
Dlamini explained that Phakama Mbabane was more than a slogan.
“It is a call to action. It urges us to rise above challenges, stand tall in unity, and celebrate the potential that exists in every ward, every neighbourhood, and every young person in our city. Through this tournament, we are saying: Mbabane rise up through sport, rise up through fair play, rise together.”
He noted that the sponsorship benefits teams from both Mbabane East and West, reminding residents that while constituencies may be separated by boundaries, the city remains united by shared pride, shared dreams, and a shared love for football.
“To the players, embrace the moment. Play with heart, passion and pride as you represent your communities. Win or lose, conduct yourselves with honour, because true champions are built on character, not just scores,” he said.
The MP also applauded the tireless efforts of coaches, officials and organisers who continue to nurture talent and instil lifelong values behind the scenes. He further commended supporters and fans for their energy and presence, which he said makes the game electric.
