MBABANE – A wave of progress is set to roll through the Hhohho region as the Ministry of Public Works and Transport takes bold steps toward upgrading key road networks.
In a show of collaboration and community-driven development, the Roads Department team held successful stakeholder engagements with residents and traditional leaders at Eluhlendlweni and Sigangeni Umphakatsi on March 28 and 29, 2025. These meetings officially kick-started the long-awaited upgrade of the D120 and D78 roads—projects poised to transform local mobility and stimulate cross-border trade.
The engagement at Eluhlendlweni Umphakatsi focused on preparing for the upgrade of the Sigangeni-Lundzi (D120) road. This project aims to improve the road by upgrading its current gravel wearing surface with a more durable double seal surfacing. The upgrade is expected to commence in August 2025 and will take approximately 12 months to complete. Once finished, the newly surfaced road will serve as an alternative route connecting the Kingdom of Eswatini to the Republic of South Africa via the Lundzi Border Gate. This upgrade is anticipated to enhance cross-border trade and facilitate transportation for residents and businesses along the route.
On March 29, 2025, a stakeholder engagement meeting was also held at Sigangeni Umphakatsi to discuss the finalization of the 6.5-kilometer road upgrade from Sigangeni to Hebron (D78). This project is designed to enhance mobility and significantly reduce travel time along the Siphocosini-Mvambi-Sigangeni-Hebron-Ekupheleni-Motshane corridor. Construction of this section is scheduled to begin in August 2025 and is expected to take 12 months to complete. The improved road will provide easier access for commuters and businesses while enhancing the overall transport network in the region.
These stakeholder engagements provided an important platform for traditional leaders, community members, and other interested parties to voice their concerns, offer input, and understand the scope of these developments.
