MBABANE The Government of Eswatini, through the Ministry of Economic Planning and Development, today launched the preparatory processes for the 2027 Population and Housing Census (PHC) and the 2025/26 Economic Census, laying the foundation for smart planning and a more inclusive Eswatini.

The launch, was officiated by the Honourable Minister of Economic Planning, Dr Tambo Gina, with support from the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Eswatini. Speaking at the launch, Minister Gina described the two national exercises as “crucial for providing reliable and timely data that will improve the quality of life, offer valuable socio-economic insights, and help us understand in detail how our economy is structured and performing.”

The Population and Housing Census, conducted every ten years in line with United Nations guidelines, begins with a mapping and listing phase that prepares for the main data collection. The last census in 2017 was Eswatini’s first fully digital census, and the 2027 census builds on this success by employing modern data collection techniques to ensure accuracy and efficiency.

“The census allows us to capture every individual and household, ensuring that no one is left behind. Accurate and inclusive data is the foundation for planning our schools, hospitals, roads, and social services,” Minister Gina emphasized.

The Economic Census complements this by collecting comprehensive information from all businesses across the country, regardless of size, capturing data on production, employment, and investment. “Your business story shapes our economy,” the Minister stated, highlighting how the census will inform national economic planning and policies to strengthen private sector growth and job creation.

Speaking on behalf of UNFPA, Head of Office Ms Margaret Thwala-Tembe praised the government’s commitment to high-quality, data-driven planning. She noted that UNFPA provides technical expertise in census design, data processing, capacity building, and advocacy for effective use of data. “UNFPA is proud to partner with the Government of Eswatini in ensuring that the 2027 census will produce accurate, inclusive, and high-quality data that drives sustainable development,” she said.

The Minister also called on the public to cooperate with census enumerators, who will carry official identity cards, letters signed by the Director of Statistics, and wear branded project t-shirts for easy identification. The joint launch of the Population and Housing Census and Economic Census highlights the government’s proactive approach to planning for the country’s future. By equipping decision-makers with precise, up-to-date information, Eswatini is positioned to make informed policy choices that enhance social welfare, boost economic growth, and ensure that development reaches every citizen.

As Minister Gina concluded, “These censuses are not just statistics, they are the blueprint for a stronger, more inclusive Eswatini. We urge all citizens and businesses to participate fully and contribute to shaping our nation’s future.”
