MBABANE – The Southern African Development Community (SADC) Secretariat has announced an exciting career opportunity for legal professionals, inviting applications for the position of Head of Legal at its headquarters in Gaborone, Botswana.
This role presents a unique chance for experienced lawyers to contribute to regional integration and the development of a robust legal framework across Southern Africa.
As Head of Legal, the successful candidate will lead the Legal Services Unit, providing expert advice to SADC organs, Member States, and partners on a wide range of matters including treaties, protocols, disputes, and law harmonisation. They will also serve as the secretary to the Committee of Ministers of Justice/Attorneys-General, playing a central role in ensuring smooth coordination and informed decision-making across the region.
The position involves shaping and reviewing legal frameworks, contracts, agreements, and memoranda of understanding, all aimed at strengthening regional cooperation. Additionally, the Head of Legal will oversee dispute resolution, manage external legal counsel, safeguard SADC’s legal interests, and review contracts and associated risks. This high-level role also includes strategic responsibilities such as policy development, budgeting, risk management, and providing support for audits.
Leadership is at the heart of the role. The Head of Legal will build and manage a high-performing team, fostering a culture of excellence through mentoring, training, planning, and performance oversight. The SADC Secretariat is seeking a candidate with strong leadership qualities, excellent communication and negotiation skills, and the ability to think strategically while delivering results. Resilience, professionalism, and a commitment to collaboration are also key attributes for success.
Applicants must hold a Master’s Degree in Law from a recognised institution and be licensed to practise law in any SADC Member State. They should have a minimum of ten years of legal experience, including at least five years in senior legal or management roles within either the public or private sector. Familiarity with international treaties, SADC legal instruments, and Member States’ constitutions is essential.
